Welder Job Description We are seeking skilled and certified Welding and Shipfitting professionals to support shipbuilding and repair operations. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in welding carbon steel and stainless steel using SMAW and/or GTAW processes in multiple positions, including 6G. This role requires strict adherence to quality, safety, and industry standards. Responsibilities Perform welding on carbon steel to carbon steel using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW). Execute stainless steel welding using SMAW and/or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). Complete welds in all positions, including flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead, and 6G restricted position. Read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and technical drawings. Ensure weld quality meets required codes and specifications (AWS, NAVSEA, or project standards as applicable). Inspect completed welds and perform minor repairs or rework as needed. Maintain equipment and follow all safety protocols. Fit, align, and assemble structural components for shipbuilding or repair. Perform carbon steel to carbon steel welding using SMAW as required to support fit-up activities. Read and interpret structural drawings, layouts, and specifications. Use hand tools, torches, and measuring instruments to properly position and secure components. Collaborate with welders, supervisors, and other trades to meet production timelines. Essential Skills Qualified/certified in Carbon Steel to Carbon Steel (SMAW) and Stainless Steel (SMAW and/or GTAW). Ability to weld in all positions, including 6G. Proven experience in shipbuilding, ship repair, or heavy industrial environments. Ability to pass welding tests and certifications as required. Strong understanding of safety procedures and quality standards. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in naval shipyards or maritime environments. Familiarity with NAVSEA or military welding standards. Ability to work in confined spaces, heights, and physically demanding environments. Why Work Here? Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Newport News, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr.
