This is work in the maintenance and repair of diesel engines and other marine equipment in the Department of Transportation, Ferry Division. Assignments are received from a Marine Mechanic Supervisor. Employees perform tasks ranging from general and routine assignments to those of moderate complexity requiring the application of knowledge and ability acquired from on-the-job training dealing with ferry vessels. Guidance and instruction in the principles and techniques involved are provided by a marine mechanic, adjusting the degree of supervision given to employees based on the scope and difficulty of the assignment. This position also assists other entities in the Ferry Division and may require overnight travel. The employee must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle. All other duties as required by the supervisor. Duties will include, but not limited to:
  • Repair and overhaul diesel engines which involve the disassembly, inspection and re-assembly of valves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, crankshaft, camshaft, bearings, timing gears and chains, valve mechanisms, injectors, and pumps.
  • Repair and adjust reduction gears, clutches and couplings.
  • Replace propeller shafts and bearings and aligns to the engines.
  • Repair and overhaul fire pumps, bilge pumps and hydraulic pumps.
  • Use of bench grinders, hand grinders, belt sanders, bandsaws, and pneumatic tools.
  • Operation of drill press and hydraulic press.
  • Read, understand and utilize blueprints.
  • Use of common cutting tools.
  • Read conversion charts of fraction to decimal and standard to metric units.
  • Use measuring instruments such as dial calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, radius gauges, multimeter, and telescoping gauges.
  • Performs related duties as required.
This position works from the NCDOT Shipyard in Manns Harbor. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT and Ferry Division's drug and Fit-For-Duty tests.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences Salary Grade and Salary Range:
NC08 - $39,244 - $68,679 Management prefers applicants with the following: Working knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines. Knowledge of the operating principles of reduction gears and hydraulic systems. Knowledge of the operating principles of air and electric control systems. Knowledge of the operating principles of vacuum and pressure pumps. Demonstrated ability to determine the cause of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment. Minimum Education and Experience Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience." High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of progressive experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, hydraulic, air and electric systems, and components, preferably in the ship repair or shipbuilding industry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
