Job Description

Benefits:
This position does not receive fringe benefits. Pursuant to Federal law, employees in this position make contributions to a Deferred Compensation Retirement Program that are refundable, with any accrued interest, upon retirement or separation.
Description:
Under general supervision, to supervise group recreational programs, free play and special activities for various age groups; perform related duties as required. Outline of Duties Depending on assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Enforces established rules and regulations governing the safe use of pools; observes the swimming pool and surrounding area for emergencies; rescues bathers as necessary; administers artificial respiration and first aid as needed; attends all staff meetings and training sessions; performs assigned pool maintenance tasks including daily reports and chemical handling; implement guarding procedures, scheduling and staffing of all programs at the facility; supervise lifeguard staff; conduct In-Service Training and rescue drills; assists Community Services Department Supervisor in staff evaluation, review and discipline; perform scheduling and paperwork functions including class registrations; conduct all administrative and money handling procedures; displays strong and professional public relations skills; teach Beginning thru Advanced swimming lessons, Infant/Pre-school classes, Basic Water and Emergency Water Safety Courses and monitor the instruction of Lifeguard Training courses.
Minimum Qualifications Education & Experience:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include one year as an Assistant Pool Manager with the City of Whittier and completion of the following certifications: American Red Cross Certificate in Lifeguard Training American Red Cross Community C.P.R. Certificate American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate Title 22 First Aide training must be taken within one year of hire. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificate American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Instruction Certificate American Red Cross C.P.R. & First Aid Instructor Certificate is desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of artificial respiration, first aid and safety; chemical usage and balance related to pool water maintenance. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; supervise, motivate, train and evaluate staff; enforce water safety rules and regulations; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Medical:
Candidates will be required, as a prerequisite to employment, to successfully pass a physical examination, Depending on assignment, a drug screen may be included as part of the physical examination. Prior to hire, candidates must pass a background/reference investigation, including a fingerprint check, and will be required to submit proof of U.S. Citizenship or employment authorization if not a U.S. Citizen.
