POSITION SUMMARY
The Government Affairs Director (GAD) leads the association's advocacy efforts to protect private property rights, advance housing opportunities, and promote a favorable business environment for
REALTORS
® and the real estate industry. This position develops and implements government affairs strategies, monitors legislative and regulatory activity, builds relationships with elected and appointed officials, engages members in the political process, and serves as the primary liaison between the association, policymakers, coalition partners, and the community. The GAD champions REALTOR® involvement in public policy issues affecting real estate, housing, land use, taxation, economic development, and private property rights while promoting a positive image of
REALTORS
® through civic engagement and community leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Government Affairs and Advocacy Develop, implement, and evaluate local government affairs strategies that advance the association's policy priorities and strategic objectives. Monitor, research, and analyze legislative, regulatory, and public policy issues affecting the real estate industry, housing, land use, economic development, and private property rights. Prepare policy analyses, position statements, reports, and advocacy materials to inform association leadership, committees, and members. Represent the association at government meetings, public hearings, stakeholder discussions, and industry events. Political Engagement and REALTOR® Party Programs Promote participation in and support of the
REALTORS
® Political Action Committee (RPAC), Issues Mobilization Fund, and other REALTOR® Party initiatives. Develop and implement fundraising, awareness, and member engagement programs supporting RPAC and advocacy objectives. Coordinate candidate screening, interview, endorsement, and recommendation processes in accordance with association and RPAC policies. Facilitate member involvement in political and advocacy activities, including legislative meetings, REALTOR® Day at the Capitol, candidate forums, and local government engagement opportunities. Relationship Building and Coalition Development Establish and maintain productive relationships with elected officials, government staff, regulatory agencies, business leaders, community stakeholders, and coalition partners. Identify and cultivate opportunities for members to build meaningful relationships with policymakers and community leaders. Build and maintain coalitions with organizations whose interests align with the association's advocacy priorities. Assist in identifying, recruiting, and supporting
REALTORS
® for service on local boards, commissions, advisory committees, and other public leadership positions. Member Engagement and Communications Educate and train members on public policy issues, advocacy strategies, and effective engagement with elected officials and the public. Develop and distribute timely communications regarding legislative, regulatory, and political developments impacting the membership. Serve as a resource for members seeking information related to government affairs, public policy, advocacy efforts, and industry issues. Committee and Organizational Leadership Serve as staff liaison to government affairs-related committees, task forces, and work groups, providing leadership, support, and strategic guidance. Collaborate with association leadership and staff to align advocacy initiatives with organizational goals and member needs. Assist with strategic planning, budgeting, program development, and performance measurement related to government affairs activities. Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, reporting requirements, and REALTOR® association policies related to advocacy and political activities. Perform other duties as assigned in support of the association's mission and strategic objectives.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND EXPECTATIONS
Regular attendance at government meetings, committee meetings, political events, and community functions, including occasional evening or weekend commitments. Periodic travel for local, state, and national meetings and conferences. Must maintain a professional demeanor and effectively represent the association with members, elected officials, media representatives, and community stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of government affairs, public policy, political advocacy, and legislative processes. Strong relationship-building, communication, and public speaking skills. Ability to analyze complex policy issues and communicate impacts effectively to diverse audiences. Experience organizing grassroots advocacy efforts, political engagement programs, or coalition initiatives. Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and exercise sound judgment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and member communication platforms. Familiarity with REALTOR® association advocacy programs, RPAC, and the real estate industry is preferred.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE 1
) Bachelor's degree in communications, political science, public policy or related field, and/or, 2) 3-5 years of experience in government relations, advocacy or public policy.
