Serving twenty counties with two locations in Chattanooga and one in Dalton, the Chattanooga Area Food Bank's mission is to lead a network of partners and unite the community to eliminate hunger by feeding, nourishing, and empowering those we serve. The Director of Community Engagement provides organizational leadership for volunteer engagement, events, Northwest Georgia community engagement, and on‑site guest experience at the Main Warehouse - ensuring strong, mission‑centered connections between the Food Bank and the communities we serve.
Job Responsibilities Include:
Leadership & Team Oversight Provide strategic leadership and supervision for a growing community engagement team of 5+. Foster a collaborative, service‑oriented culture that emphasizes excellence, professionalism, accountability, and mission alignment. Set clear goals, expectations, and performance standards for community engagement functions. Mentor and develop team members to build capacity, leadership skills, and long‑term organizational strength. Volunteer Engagement Provide oversight and strategic direction for the Food Bank's volunteer engagement program across our service areas. Ensure volunteer experiences are welcoming, safe, meaningful, and aligned with organizational needs. Support recruitment, training, scheduling, stewardship, and recognition efforts that strengthen volunteer relationships and retention. Partner with internal departments to align volunteer opportunities with operational and programmatic priorities. Use data and feedback to evaluate volunteer programs and continuously improve volunteer experience. Events & Community Experiences Provide leadership and oversight for all Food Bank events, including fundraising events, donor and volunteer appreciation events, tours, open houses, and community‑facing activities. Ensure events advance organizational goals, reflect the Food Bank's brand, and create excellent, memorable, and mission‑centered experiences. Establish systems, timelines, and processes that support consistent event planning, communication, execution, and evaluation. Collaborate with Development, Communications, and Executive Leadership to align events with fundraising, stewardship, and outreach strategies. Northwest Georgia Community Engagement Oversee community engagement efforts in Northwest Georgia in partnership with the NWGA Community Engagement Manager. Ensure consistent visibility, relationship‑building, and mission alignment across the full CAFB service area. Support strategic outreach through community events, food and fund drives, presentations, partnerships, and local engagement. Maintain strong internal communication to ensure NWGA activities are integrated into broader organizational strategy. Guest Experience & Front‑of‑House Oversee the Receptionist / Guest Experience Admin to ensure a warm, professional, and welcoming experience for all guests. Set standards for hospitality, communication, and on‑site experience for donors, partners, volunteers, staff, and visitors. Ensure front‑of‑house operations (including phone coverage) support safety, efficiency, and a positive first impression of the Food Bank. Collaborate with staff across departments to coordinate tours, meetings, deliveries, and visitor flow. Strategy, Collaboration & Mission Alignment Serve as a key member of the Development leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and organizational priorities. Partner cross‑functionally with Development, Community Impact, Operations, Communications, and Executive Leadership to ensure effective support and collaboration. Ensure community engagement efforts align with brand, messaging, and the Food Bank's mission and values. Use data, feedback, and outcomes to inform continuous improvement and effective decision‑making. Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in community engagement, volunteer management, events, nonprofit leadership, or related fields. Demonstrated success leading and managing teams with diverse responsibilities. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously. Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills with a wide range of stakeholders. Proven ability to collaborate across departments and represent the organization professionally in public settings. Commitment to the mission of the Chattanooga Area Food Bank and a passion for community‑centered work. Physical Requirements Ability to meet all physical requirements of the job (occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs). Frequent sitting, standing, walking, keyboarding, stooping, bending, and phone use. Other Duties Other responsibilities as assigned.
