About the
Role:
We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Communications Officer to join our dynamic Communications Team. This position plays a vital role in our EMS operations by answering calls for service, scheduling trips, and dispatching medical transport units—often under time-sensitive and high-pressure conditions. Candidates with
EMS, 911
dispatch, EMT, or other emergency services backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Experience in an EMS communications center or public safety dispatching environment is highly preferred. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, quick decision-making ability, and strong multitasking skills. The ability to remain calm under pressure, visualize unit locations in real-time, and think critically is essential.
Responsibilities:
Receive and prioritize incoming calls and requests for service. Dispatch appropriate EMS units based on call urgency and resource availability. Monitor and track the status and location of units throughout their shift. Coordinate closely with field personnel to ensure timely, safe response. Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of calls and unit assignments. Communicate clearly and efficiently with internal and external partners. Provide real-time support to field crews during transport. Operate multi-line phone systems, CAD (Computer-Aided Dispatch) software, and other communications technology. Perform additional duties as assigned by Leadership.
Preferred Experience:
Prior experience in an EMS or 911 dispatch environment. EMT certification or background in emergency medical services strongly preferred. Familiarity with EMS protocols and terminology.
Prerequisites:
Be at least 18 years of age. Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language. Have an acceptable motor vehicle record in compliance with company policy. Ability to analyze situations quickly and make effective decisions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution abilities. Proficient typing skills for data entry. Must not have any disqualifying criminal or regulatory violations per Virginia EMS regulations (12VAC5-31-910).
