Job Description

Jackson County is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list to fill current and future Full Time and Limited Term Communication Officer positions. These are non-sworn positions in the Communication Division of the Sheriff's Office. Engages in the dispatching of emergency vehicles in response to calls requiring police, fire or medical services; answers and logs calls and inquiries of emergent and non-emergent nature. This is a specialized non-sworn law enforcement position in the Communication Division of the Sheriff's Office. This position requires training and familiarization with emergency service dispatching entailing a 9-1-1 system.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Answers calls by radio and telephone and dispatches public safety personnel as required, and provides information to callers and public safety responders Listens to radio communications and responds with voice quality that transmits with clarity. Listens to multiple conversations at the same time. Logs calls and actions taken in accordance with prescribed procedures Operates high speed electronic teletype with either printer or CRT readout Ascertains nature of calls to assure correct information to determine necessary action to be taken Operates all equipment and monitors its operation to assure proper functioning Makes out reports as prescribed by established procedure Performs clerical support services, such as filing, searching files through data processing equipment or other related clerical functions Performs multiple tasks simultaneously Deals with the public and public safety personnel courteously and in a business like manner, even under stress Performs a variety of tasks associated with the operation of a computer aided emergency communication center Acts courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times with the public, public officials, service vendors, inmates, peer employees, all county related departments and supervisors
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree or job-related course work and/or knowledge of public safety and security preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of police communication methods and techniques Knowledge of weaponry, public safety, and security operations, rules, regulations precautions, prevention, and the protection of people, data and property Knowledge of laws, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules and the democratic political process Knowledge of state statutes, county ordinances and other regulations which apply to county lands and facilities Knowledge of specific locations within Jackson County and surrounding areas Knowledge of all operations of an emergency dispatch center SKILLS Excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with the public in enforcement situations required Utilize effective communication skills; be polite, courteous, and professional in manner Problem Identification skills

  • developing constructive and cooperative working relations among the county and other agencies Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment Ability to read printed maps, icons, alpha and alpha/numeric detail and teletypes from other sources Willing and able to work varied shifts and weekends and holidays and long hours in emergency situations Good hearing and visual acuity as prescribed in the physical abilities section of this job description Ability to read and discern lighted equipment, boards and alarm monitoring equipment Ability to recall information Ability to concentrate and handle distractions while performing a task Ability to derive the correct meaning from various types of information received orally Ability to cope with both periods of inactivity and periods of intense stress Ability to read and interpret documents, and laws in the English language Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communications Ability to speak additional language preferred Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form Inductive and deductive reasoning•ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense
