Full Job Description Reporting Structure:
The Communications Specialist reports to the Vice President of External & Internal Affairs. This position is based in Birmingham, Alabama.
Position Summary:
Women's Foundation of Alabama envisions a society where power and possibility are not limited by gender, race, or place. We leverage our influence to build gender, racial, and economic equity for women. As Alabama's only statewide public women's foundation we deploy critical resources into community-based initiatives with a gender lens, conducting and communicating gender-focused research, and shaping public policy to transform systems. The Communications Specialist will support and execute the Foundation's communications strategy, ensuring that WFA's voice, brand, and public presence are clear, consistent, compelling, and aligned across audiences. The incumbent will manage and coordinate day-to-day communications operations, including digital content creation, social media management, website updates, newsletter production, collateral development, media relations support and performance reporting. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, creative storyteller, and detail-oriented project manager who can translate WFA's mission, research, advocacy, grantmaking, donor engagement, and statewide impact into compelling content that informs, engages, and inspires action. This role requires sound judgement, brand discipline, strong writing and editing skills, and the ability to collaborate across teams to elevate WFA's visibility and impact.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Creation & Digital Management:
  • Develop, curate, and manage diverse content for WFA's communication channels, including social media, website, email newsletters, blogs, marketing programs and other public-facing platforms.
  • Collaborate with the WFA team for the development of regular content, including blogs and features.
  • Produce and manage video content for diverse marketing channels, events, and engagement opportunities.
  • Support website content updates and ensure information remains current, accurate, accessible, and aligned with WFA's brand and messaging.
  • Maintain a communications calendar that aligns with organizational priorities, events, advocacy moments, fundraising activities, and programmatic milestones.
Storytelling & Impact Communications:
  • Craft storytelling initiatives and campaigns that elevate WFA's mission, community impact, grantee partners, program participants, donors, and statewide priorities.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to gather stories, data, quotes, photos, and impact examples from external audience including grantee partners, program alumni, community members, donors, and internal teams to communicate WFA's work with accuracy, dignity, and care.
  • Attend virtual and in-person events to capture and share content that ensures brand visibility and alignment.
  • Translate research, policy, grantmaking, and programmatic work into clear and accessible content for diverse audiences.
Communication & Outreach:
  • Innovatively grow WFA's social media presence, ensuring dynamic and engaging interactions.
  • Coordinate and oversee the distribution of monthly WFA newsletters, leveraging online outreach strategies for maximum impact.
  • Serve as an initial point of contact for media inquiries and coordinate responses in partnership with the Vice President of External & Internal Affairs, engaging local and national media outlets, journalists, and social media influencers to amplify WFA's presence and reach.
  • Co-Design and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to fortify WFA's influence and engagement across the state.
Partnership & Advocacy:
  • Support communications and engagement connected to strategic relationships with public officials, community leaders, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide vital communication tools to support advocacy initiatives and amplify program impacts.
  • Support campaigns and efforts to recruit, train, and mobilize volunteers as needed.
  • Collaborate closely with the development department on donor-centered grassroots initiatives and campaigns.
Branding, Design & Reporting:
  • Ensure consistent adherence of WFA's branding and messaging guidelines across all communication channels and materials.
  • Lead the design and creation process for various WFA products, publications, and collateral.
  • Support internal message alignment by helping prepare talking points, briefing materials, templates, and communications tools as needed.
  • Generate insightful monthly reports based on web analytics, monitoring trends, and setting actionable growth benchmarks.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, nonprofit management, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in a similar role, with a preference for a non-profit background.
  • Proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and familiarity with major social media platforms and WordPress.
  • Experience with graphic design, email marketing, and AI tools, preferred. Proven ability to write clear, compelling and persuasive content for diverse audiences, including the ability to edit and publish polished, professional materials.
  • Demonstrated success in digital content creation and effective social media strategy execution.
  • Broad knowledge spanning key areas of women and children's well-being, including education, health, and socio-economic factors.
  • Proven ability to multitask, prioritize, and deliver results under tight deadlines.
  • Stellar communication skills, coupled with experience or comfort in public speaking.
  • Ability to communicate with funders, Executive Board and committees and public officials with a high degree of professionalism
  • Innately self-driven, displaying creativity, and an ability to work autonomously or as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to travel and work outside standard business hours as required.
  • Robust understanding of grassroots advocacy, community mobilization, and public policy.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing programs that engage diverse communities; a strong understanding of best practices related to gender, racial, and economic justice.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Salary Range:
$57,000-$60,000, commensurate with experience. The Foundation offers opportunities for annual salary growth based on performance, organizational budget, and internal equity.
