Job Description

Purpose of Position Under the general direction of the Airport Director, this position is responsible for managing and executing the airport's communications, public relations, and emergency communications activities. This role serves as the primary steward of the airport's day-to-day public-facing communications and ensures accurate, timely, and engaging messaging across all platforms, including during irregular operations and emergency events. The Communications Specialist develops and oversees social media, website content, media coordination, tenant communications, special events, promotional efforts, and crisis communication strategies to enhance passenger experience, maintain public trust, and support operational continuity. This position plays a key role in coordinating messaging during emergencies in collaboration with airport leadership, public safety partners, and external agencies. This is a professional position within the context of Montana law and FMAA Policies and Procedures. Distinguishing Characteristics Incumbent shall be responsible for implementing communication strategies and maintaining the airport's public image through effective storytelling, digital engagement, and coordinated media interactions. The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, creativity, professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple priorities. The incumbent must demonstrate sound judgment, discretion, tact, and integrity when representing the airport to the public, tenants, and media. Essential Duties and Responsibilities The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Develops and executes the airport's communication and public relations strategy in alignment with leadership direction and organizational priorities. Serves as a primary point of contact for routine media inquiries and coordinates responses with airport leadership as appropriate. Drafts and distributes press releases, media advisories, public notices, and other official communications. . Manages the airport's advertising and marketing budget. Manages and maintains the airport's website, ensuring content is accurate, current, accessible, and consistent with branding standards. Oversees day-to-day management of airport social media platforms, including content creation, scheduling, monitoring, and public engagement. Creates original digital content, including written posts, photography, and short-form video, to promote the airport and enhance passenger experience. Engages with the public online and in person by responding to questions, comments, and concerns in a timely and professional manner. Develops and distributes internal and external communications, including tenant communications, operational updates, and informational materials. Coordinates and supports airport special events, promotions, community outreach activities, and public-facing initiatives. Attends airport events and activities as needed to provide on-site coverage, photography, and public engagement. Collaborates with airport departments, tenants, airlines, and community partners to support communication needs. Tracks engagement metrics and media coverage and provides summaries or recommendations to leadership as requested. Supports crisis communication efforts in coordination with airport leadership and established protocols. Maintains brand consistency across all communication materials and platforms. Participates in special projects and performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or a related field. Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in communications, digital content creation, public relations, or public engagement. Physical Requirements Requires occasional lifting of equipment or materials up to 30 pounds. May require standing, walking, bending, reaching, and moving throughout airport facilities and event spaces. Regular use of a computer, camera, and mobile devices is required. Must be able to communicate effectively through speech and hearing and visually observe details necessary to perform job duties. Working Conditions Most work is performed in an office and airport terminal environment. The position may require work outside of traditional business hours, including evenings or weekends to support events or time-sensitive communications. The position may be subject to moderate stress due to deadlines, public interaction, and operational demands. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills. Experience managing social media platforms and digital content. Knowledge of public relations and media coordination practices. Photography and basic videography skills. Ability to create clear, engaging, and audience-appropriate messaging. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to exercise discretion and professionalism in public-facing communications. Proficiency with MS Office suite and common digital communication tools. Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals and organizations. Pay:
$66,560.00 - $72,800.00 per year
