Job Description

Position Summary
HIGHLIGHTS SUNY
Geneseo is searching for a Communications and Security Specialist. In this role, you will provide communications, security, and public safety services within a 24/7 operation in the University Police Department of the State University of New York (SUNY). Your primary responsibility is to function as a desk officer, performing dispatching activities and using various databases, online systems, and multiple video sources. Where appropriate, you may perform patrol duties including but not limited to building guard, parking enforcement, foot patrol, and other related duties assisting University Police Officers. You will be given direction regarding assignments, briefing on current problems at the beginning of the shift, and instruction in job-related law enforcement techniques.
SHIFT :
This position works fixed days with rotating hours based on seniority bid including nights, weekends, and holidays. We are accepting applicants for
NYS HELPS
appointments, you do not need to be on the University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 (CSS-1) list to be appointed. You must meet the qualifications as outlined in the "Required Qualifications" section. For the duration of the
NY HELPS
Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), employees hired under
NY HELPS
will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a
NY HELPS
title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified. Required Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must have permanent appointment in a University Police Communications & Security Specialist, SG-10 classified position or be reachable for appointment on the current NY State Civil Service canvass list for a University Police Communications & Security Specialist, SG-10, or be transfer eligible. For
NYS HELPS
Eligibility You must meet ONE of the following qualifications: one year of full-time experience as a police or peace officer; OR one year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement; OR one year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military, where you served as a dispatcher of military police/security personnel; OR thirty (30) semester college credit hours from an accredited school ( if you meet this requirement, please include a copy of your unofficial transcripts as part of your application ) Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship. Preferred Qualifications
OPERATIONAL NEEDS
Valid NYS Drivers License Completion of the 8-hour pre-assignment training course for security guards or possession of an active security guard license.
