Open Until Filled Project Homeless Connect Washington County (PHC/PHCWC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering those experiencing homelessness by meeting them where they are and walking with them on their unique journeys toward stability and self-reliance. Our multi-pronged approach, built on trusting relationships, includes collaborative one-day resource events, a street outreach team, an access center, peer mentors, shelter services, and housing resources with case management. Utilizing trauma-informed care, a DEI lens, and best practices, we are working to end homelessness and transform the lives of those we serve. Position Overview:
The Marketing and Communications Specialist plays a vital role in advancing Project Homeless Connect's mission by developing and implementing communications strategies that increase awareness, engagement, and community support. Through compelling storytelling, digital content, and creative communications, this position helps bring the public into the work of PHC and highlights the impact of our programs, partnerships, and services.
Primary Responsibilities:
Social Media & Newsletters Develop and maintain a consistent social media presence aligned with PHC's mission, campaigns, and organizational priorities, including creating and scheduling approximately 3 posts per week using the "Educate, Inspire, Ask" model. Develop and send 1-3 newsletters per month. Maintain and grow the email list for community outreach. Utilize Facebook, Instagram, Hootsuite, YouTube, LinkedIn, and other platforms as we grow. Manage comments, messages, and other engagements on social media platforms. Storytelling & Community Engagement Identify and share stories that highlight program impact, client successes (with appropriate consent), volunteer engagement, donor partnerships, and community collaborations. Translate organizational activities and outcomes into accessible stories for community audiences. Video Support development of multimedia content, including short videos, interviews, and potential podcast content highlighting PHC programs, partners, and community impact. Press Releases Write and distribute press releases for major events and announcements. Maintain an updated database of media contacts. Design & Signage Create signage, flyers, and digital assets that align with PHC's brand standards for major events, temporary programs, fundraising activities, and community outreach. Website Maintain and update website content, including program information, events, news, employment opportunities, and organizational updates. Ensure website content is accurate, timely, accessible, and aligned with PHC's communications goals and brand standards. Create and format web content, including images, graphics, and written updates. Collaborate with external website partners or vendors on website updates, improvements, and troubleshooting as needed. Impact Reports and Snapshots Assist in compiling PHC's annual impact report and quarterly program reports. Produce an "Impact Snapshot" after each One Day Event to share with stakeholders. Communication Analytics Track and report on communications metrics, including social media engagement, email performance, website activity, and other outreach indicators to evaluate effectiveness and inform future strategies. Fundraising & Organizational Communications Support fundraising campaigns, donor communications, sponsorship recognition, and special initiatives through compelling written and visual content. Assist with creation of donor-facing materials, presentations, and campaign updates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education, training, and at least 2 years of relevant experience in communications, marketing, content creation, public relations, nonprofit communications, or related work will be considered.
Organizational Skills:
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
Communication Skills:
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing for public audiences (social media, newsletters, press releases, etc.).
Technology Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office/Google Workspace, design tools (e.g., Canva), and social media platforms.
Storytelling:
Ability to translate complex organizational information into clear, engaging, and audience-centered communications.
Mission-Alignment:
Commitment to PHC's mission and ability to communicate respectfully about individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
Privacy/Ethics:
Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality when sharing stories and information related to program participants.
Relationship-Building:
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations, community partners, donors, and volunteers.
Work Style:
Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently while thriving in a team-oriented environment.
Experience Preferred:
Communications:
Background in social media management, email marketing, and/or website content updates.
Website Management:
Experience updating websites through content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress.
Design & Media:
Experience creating flyers, signage, and short videos for events or campaigns. Video editing is strongly preferred. Experience with photography, videography, and/or capturing content at community events.
Human Services:
Experience working with organizations that serve vulnerable populations, especially those experiencing homelessness.
