TRS Eligible About Us - Values Overview Department Summary The University of North Texas (UNT) College of Education is a leading educator preparation institution. It is divided into four main departments offering a total of roughly 9 bachelor's, 18 master's, and 14 doctoral concentrations. Position Overview The Communications Specialist provides dedicated communications support for the College of Education (COE) to ensure timely, accurate, consistent, and accessible messaging aligned with COE priorities and the university's strategic direction. The role exists to gather and translate complex information into clear communications for internal and external audiences and to maintain high-quality content across COE channels. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related field and two years of experience in writing and/or editing publications; or any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to conceptualize, write and edit content for university audiences.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, conduct multiple tasks and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to visually inspect print and digital copy.
  • Knowledge of spelling, grammar, punctuation and Associated Press and Chicago Manual styles.
  • Knowledge of writing guidelines for various media.
  • Ability to create unique copy for each format (print, online, broadcast).
  • Understanding of institutional strategy (or ability to quickly assimilate) and ability to integrate strategy into modes of communication.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities for web-based positions include content management, editing software, CSS, HTML, cross-browser testing and manipulation of page display for mobile devices.
  • Ability to adhere to ADA compliance.
  • Ability to produce web site prototypes.
  • Ability to organize information from numerous sources into cohesive and effective navigation.
  • Ability to check web sites for accuracy and functionality before sites are published.
  • Ability to translate documents, requirements, wireframes into professionally designed, functional web properties. Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in higher education or public-sector communications
  • Familiarity with accessibility tools and remediation processes
  • Experience monitoring digital channels or social media for issue identification
  • Basic understanding of analytics or performance tracking for digital content Required License/Registration/Certifications Job Duties Coordinate with COE leadership and subject-matter experts to gather time-sensitive, web-worthy information; develop key messages for internal and external audiences.
Write and edit content for multiple audiences and formats (webpages, articles, brochures, reports, policies/technical documentation, and targeted communications) Manage and update COE website content; ensure accuracy, consistency, functionality, and mobile readiness prior to publishing Ensure digital communications meet ADA/accessibility requirements; review and remediate content as needed to maintain compliance. Support planning, drafting, and production of print and online publications and collateral to meet deadlines and strategic priorities. Monitor social media for UNT/COE-related issues; flag emerging concerns and provide timely updates to appropriate stakeholders. Create or assist with audience-specific promotional/advertising copy across appropriate channels to support COE initiatives and outreach.
