Job Description

Position Overview The Development & Marketing Director leads fundraising, communications, and audience development for the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. This position is a key leadership role at an exciting moment in the museum's history, as SLOMA prepares for a major institutional expansion that will significantly increase exhibition space, community programming, and public access to the arts in San Luis Obispo County . Working closely with the Executive Director, Board of Trustees, and staff, the Director develops and implements strategies that grow contributed revenue, build meaningful donor engagement, and elevate the museum's visibility across the region. The role will play a central part in building philanthropic support and public excitement for the museum's next chapter. Key Responsibilities Development & Fundraising Lead and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to support the museum's operations, exhibitions, programs, and future expansion. Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, foundations, and corporate partners. Work with the Executive Director and Board to identify and develop major gift opportunities, including support for the museum's expansion and long-term growth. Manage and grow the museum's membership and annual giving programs. Oversee grant strategy and legacy program Plan and execute donor events and engagement opportunities that deepen relationships and inspire support. Track fundraising performance and maintain accurate donor records. Marketing & Communications Develop and execute integrated marketing strategies that promote exhibitions, programs, and institutional initiatives. Build public awareness and enthusiasm around SLOMA's expansion and evolving role in the community. Oversee the museum's brand, messaging, and visual identity across all platforms. Manage digital communications including website content, social media, and email campaigns. Lead media relations and partnerships with regional and statewide press. Collaborate with curatorial and education staff to promote exhibitions and public programs. Ensure consistent storytelling that highlights the museum's impact in the community. Strategic Leadership Serve as a member of the museum's leadership team and contribute to institutional planning and growth. Collaborate across departments to align fundraising, marketing, and programming strategies. Support Board development and engagement in fundraising activities. Analyze audience and donor data to guide strategic decisions and expand reach. Qualifications 5+ years of experience in nonprofit development, marketing, or communications (arts or cultural organizations preferred). Demonstrated success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and grant writing. Strong marketing and storytelling skills, including digital communications and audience development. Excellent writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to build relationships with donors, community leaders, and partners. Highly organized, strategic, and collaborative. Passion for the arts and commitment to community engagement. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting capital campaigns or institutional growth initiatives. Experience working with museum boards and volunteer leadership. Knowledge of donor database systems and CRM platforms. Familiarity with the arts and philanthropic landscape in California. Compensation & Benefits Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Benefits may include health coverage, paid time off, and professional development opportunities.
Pay:
$70,000.00 - $80,000.00 per year
