Job Description

Overview:
VOLT Lighting is seeking a highly capable Product Development Technician to support the development, validation, and launch of connected lighting and electromechanical products. This role combines hands-on laboratory testing with product development support, IoT platform interaction, and cross-functional collaboration. The position plays a critical role in bridging engineering, product management, and supplier teams by supporting feasibility assessments, contributing to validation processes, and participating in design reviews. The ideal candidate has experience with lighting products, IoT-connected devices, communication protocols, and hardware validation within a new product development environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Execute electrical, mechanical, environmental, and functional testing of lighting and IoT-enabled products
  • Develop and maintain test plans, procedures, and validation records
  • Navigate and manage the Tuya platform dashboard for device setup, configuration, and basic troubleshooting
  • Perform functional evaluation of communication protocols (WiFi, BLE, Zigbee)
  • Build and modify prototypes using evaluation boards, test fixtures, and lab equipment
  • Oversee and coordinate First Article Inspection (FAI) activities for new product introductions
  • Participate in product design reviews and provide feedback based on testing results and observed risks
  • Develop product demos, mockups, and sample configurations for sales and internal presentations
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Product Management, Supply Chain, and suppliers
  • Maintain organized documentation of test data, issues, and validation results
Skills:
  • Experience working with IoT-enabled products or connected devices
  • Familiarity with IoT platforms such as Tuya
  • Basic understanding of wireless communication technologies (WiFi, BLE, Zigbee)
  • Strong hands-on prototyping and troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment, such as soldering irons, voltmeters, amp meters, force gauges, crimping dies, and similar equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems.
  • Adept at multitasking and prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with light testing equipment such as footcandle meter, integrating sphere, and goniophotometer considered a plus.
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Highly organized and process oriented
Education and Experience:
  • Associate degree in a related field required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • At least 2+ years of experience working with technical testing, lab equipment, or product development support.
Physical Requirements:
  • This position requires repetitive reaching, stretching, lifting and twisting.
Work Environment:
  • May be exposed to humidity, noise, odors, dust
  • Frequent exposure to electrical and mechanical hazards
Reporting Relationships:
  • The position reports to the Director of New Product Development.
  • Internally, this position will regularly interface with all areas of the company including the Senior Staff, Operations, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing personnel in the USA and Asia.
  • Externally, this position interfaces with suppliers, contractors, and customers.

$65,000.00 - $72,000.00 per year
