Job Description

Overview:
The Media Specialist is responsible for designing and facilitating a dynamic multimedia enrichment program that empowers youth ages 7-18 to express themselves through storytelling, digital content creation, and creative technology. This role integrates photography, audio/video production, graphic design, and emerging media tools to support youth development, while reinforcing themes of violence prevention, emotional wellness and positive identity building. The Media Specialist will create structured, engaging program plans that align with Ring of Hope's mission and provide youth with safe, constructive outlets for self-expression and skill- building.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Development & Facilitation Design and implement weekly program plans, lesson agendas, and project-based learning activities Facilitate hands-on workshops in: Photography and videography Audio production (podcasts, interviews, storytelling) Graphic design & digital art Social media and digital storytelling Ensure programming is age-appropriate (7-18) and adaptable to different skill levels Integrate structured activities that promote teamwork, creativity and communication Violence Prevention & Wellness Integration Incorporate themes of violence prevention, conflict resolution, and emotional wellness into all media projects Guide youth in creating content that reflects positive decision-making, community awareness, and personal growth Use media as a tool for healing, self-expression, and storytelling around real-life experiences Youth Engagement & Mentorship Build positive, supportive relationships with participants Encourage youth voice, leadership and confidence through creative expression Provide mentorship and guidance in both technical skills and personal development Maintain a safe, inclusive and trauma-informed learning environment Program Planning and Documentation Develop weekly agendas and structured lesson plans aligned with program goals Track attendance, participation, and youth progress Collect program outputs (photos, videos, projects) for reporting and showcasing impact Collaborate with staff to align media projects with overall enrichment programming Collaboration & Events Work closely with the Program Manager and enrichment team to coordinate activities Support program showcases, community events and youth presentations Assist in creating promotional content that highlights youth work and program impact Content Creation & Program Documentation Capture photos, videos and highlights of enrichment activities (with appropriate consent) Assist with producing youth-created content for newsletters, reports, social media, and fundraising materials. Support development of digital storytelling pieces to demonstrate program impact. Maintain organized digital files and media archives. Equipment & Technology Management Oversee media equipment (cameras, microphones, editing software, tablets, computers) Ensure proper handling, storage and maintenance of equipment. Recommend new tools and technology enhancements as needed. Qualifications Experience in multimedia production (photography, videography, audio, or graphic design) Experience working the youth, preferably in community, nonprofit, or educational settings Ability to create structured lesson plans and program agendas Strong communication and facilitation skills Basic proficiency in digital tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite, video editing software, or similar platforms) Ability to connect with youth from diverse backgrounds in a respectful and engaging manner. Preferred Qualifications Background in youth development, arts education or media production Experience integrating social-emotional learning or trauma-informed practices Familiarity with violence prevention strategies or community-based programming Experience managing group projects or youth-lead productions If you're passionate about helping us build resources to support at-risk youth and families, and committed to making a positive community impact, we encourage you to apply at careers@rohchicago.org.
