Material Handler/Machine Operator

The Saw Operator & Material Handler plays a foundational role in preparing raw materials for production by performing accurate saw cutting, safe material handling, and clear documentation. This dual-role position ensures that jobs start with the right materials in the right condition, supporting speed, quality, and traceability across departments. Position Purpose The Saw Operator & Material Handler is responsible for cutting bar stock or other raw material to size using precision saws, preparing material for staging, and performing ERP transactions. The role supports daily production flow, inventory accuracy, and part traceability through safe handling, correct labeling, and documentation uploads. Core Qualifications High school diploma or GED required 1+ year of experience in a manufacturing, warehouse, or material handling environment is preferred Familiarity with metal cutting tools and material properties Ability to read measuring instruments (tape, calipers, micrometers) ERP or barcode scanning experience preferred (JobBOSS or equivalent) Strong attention to detail and safety practices Key Responsibilities Material Cutting & Preparation Operate horizontal and vertical band saws to cut material to required lengths and tolerances Review traveler or cut list for part numbers, dimensions, quantity, and special instructions Label material with job number, heat lot, and part spec to maintain traceability Perform basic deburring or preparation for staging Material Handling & Inventory Movement Safely transport material using forklifts, carts, and other equipment Move cut stock to appropriate staging or storage areas per traveler Perform put-away or transfer tasks in ERP to reflect accurate inventory locations ERP Transactions & Documentation Record material heat numbers and lot information in ERP (JobBOSS) Upload mill certifications, heat certs, and receiving documents to appropriate job or inventory record Print and apply correct labels, part tags, and barcode identifiers Preventive Maintenance & Safety Perform routine maintenance checks on saws and notify supervisor of blade wear or safety hazards Follow all PPE, machine guarding, and material lifting procedures Maintain clean and organized work areas around saws and staging zones Physical & Environmental Requirements Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 75 lbs and maneuver full-length bar stock Standing and walking for extended periods in a shop floor environment Frequent handling of metal, operation of saws, forklifts, or pallet jacks Exposure to noise, oil, and metal chips with appropriate PPE provided Systems & Tools Used Horizontal and vertical band saws (manual or semi-automatic)
