Min Hourly Rate $15.05 (Standard); $14.05 (Non-Urban); $16.30 (Portland Metro) Max Hourly Rate $21.50 (Standard); $19.50 (Non-Urban); $22.00 (Portland Metro) Position Summary The Galimba Tree Fruit Horticulture Lab at the Mid-Columbia Agricultural Research and Extension Center (MCAREC), Oregon State University (OSU), is seeking to hire 2-3 temporary Student Technical Assistants for the 2026 summer field season in Hood River, Oregon. Our research focuses on all aspects of pear and sweet cherry orchard production systems, with a particular emphasis on improving fruit quality and optimizing yield in both crops. Student assistants will support ongoing research related to pear and cherry tree physiology and orchard management. They will work both independently and as part of a small team to collect, process, and organize data from field and laboratory settings. Duties include assisting with field trials, data collection, sample processing, and general maintenance of the lab, greenhouse, and orchard. Supervisors will provide initial guidance on priorities, objectives, and deadlines. Once trained, student assistants are expected to carry out tasks independently, seeking support when encountering procedural questions or challenges. In this position, students learn and build vital career-readiness skills in the primary areas below: Communication, Critical Thinking, Teamwork, Professionalism Position Duties 50% Collect vegetative and floral/fruit samples from field plots on the MCAREC farm and potentially other regional farms Processing these samples in a laboratory or outdoor environment Dissecting flower buds and weekly counts and/or measurements of different plant organs Field counting of flowers, thinning of fruits and subsequent harvesting, as well as other tasks as needed. 40% Laboratory, greenhouse, and field site maintenance Washing and disinfecting of glassware, planting containers and/or fruit containers Weeding, painting tree trunks, setting up trunk protectors, potting, pruning and watering. 10% Management of data sets, to include collecting, collating, and entering data into computers using spreadsheets and word processing technology. Willingness to learn new skills, work well with others, ability to work independently, excellent attention to detail. This position will require assisting with collection of field data so the candidate should be comfortable working outdoors as needed, potentially in adverse weather conditions. Preferred (Special) Qualifications Biology or science background, work experience, or classes. Working Conditions / Work Schedule The typical schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm. Hours and days could vary depending on growing conditions, and more flexible scheduling can be accommodated. Occasionally we ask that students stay longer than eight hours to finish a task, but work will not exceed 40 hours/week during the summer and 20 hours/week while school is in session.
