Meat Clerk The Natural Grocery Company - 2.3 El Cerrito, CA Job Details Full-time $19.18 - $23.75 an hour 6 hours ago Qualifications Teamwork Merchandising English High school diploma or GED Meat cutting Grocery store Full Job Description Job Summary The Meat Clerk at The Natural Grocery Company plays a key role in providing our community with high-quality, responsibly sourced fresh and packed meat products, including beef, poultry, lamb, and seafood. As part of a neighborhood-focused market, this position helps maintain a clean, well-stocked, and visually appealing meat department that meets the highest standards of freshness, organization, and food safety. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role supporting the daily operations of the department, including receiving and organizing deliveries, stocking and rotating products, maintaining display cases and walk-ins, and offering friendly, knowledgeable service to shoppers. The role requires a dependable, detailed-oriented individual who takes pride in quality, professionalism, and contributes to a positive, team-oriented environment. This position reports to the Meat Department Manager. Duties Greet and assist customers in a courteous, knowledgeable, and professional manner. Stock, rotate, and merchandise fresh and packed meat items, ensuring proper dating and product freshness. Maintain clean, organized, and visually appealing meat cases and displays. Follow all proper handling, storage, temperature control, labeling, and sanitation procedures in accordance with food safety standards. Monitor product quality throughout the day and promptly remove outdated or damaged items. Receive and inspect deliveries for accuracy, quality, freshness, and safe temperature compliance. Maintain clean and organized walk-ins, prep areas, and display cases, following FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation practices. • Develop a working knowledge of product sourcing, basic cuts of meat, and safe handling practices to confidently assist customers. Safely operate store equipment (i.e. hand trucks and carts, meat slicer, meat grinder, knives and box cutters) while adhering to safety guidelines. Follow all store policies, food safety regulations, and sanitation standards. Support other departments as needed to promote efficient store operations. Skills High school diploma or equivalent preferred Previous grocery, retail, or meat department experience preferred but not required Strong customer service and communication skills Professional, friendly, and customer-focused approach Excellent attention to detail for labeling, dating, rotation, and presentation Interest in learning about meat cuts, product handling, and food-safety practices Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to changing scheduling needs Ability to stand for long periods and work in cold environments
Additional Requirements Language:
English language skills required.
Physical:
Ability to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks including reaching, kneeling, and lifting up to 40-70 lbs. This position involves working in refrigerated environments and exposure to cold temperatures (meat cooler and freezers). Works in an environment where common food allergens, including seafood are present. Shifts and Availability Flexible availability required. Must be open to working shifts between Monday and Sunday, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
