Job Description
West Pierce Fire & Rescue (WPFR) is hiring a Mechanic with an anticipated start date by August 1. Mechanics provide general repair and maintenance on all district vehicles, apparatus, vessels and equipment. This is a great opportunity to join a team of four other professionals dedicated to maintaining our fleet. The Fleet Maintenance shop is in Lakewood, WA. WPFR provides a variety of schedule options, an excellent benefits package, pay incentive opportunities and generous paid leave. This is a non-exempt (overtime eligible) position, represented by IAFF Local 1488 - Maintenance Bargaining Unit. Please see the Benefits tab for details from the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The 2026 monthly base salary range of $8,043 to $8,989 depends on experience. The CBA provides for lateral entry. Lateral employees are paid one pay grade below what their experience would indicate. The 2026 monthly base salaries are: $8,043 (0-6 months) $8,516 (7-12 months) $8,989 (13-24 months) •An employee with more than 4 years of experience shall move to the top pay grade of $9,462 after successful completion of 6 months. Controls over work:
The position shall report to and is accountable to the Fleet Manager. Performance is evaluated by the Fleet Manager through observation of daily activities, program effectiveness and degree of harmony with citizens, co-workers, and vendors. The position will work a schedule in accordance with contractual agreement.The position shall:
Perform inspections and necessary preventive maintenance of all district vehicles in accordance with district and manufacturers' requirements, and nationally recognized best practices. Perform repairs to automotive electrical components, brakes, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic systems; while applying diagnostic procedures in the performance of such work. Maintain and repair small gas motors, fire service tools, and equipment. Assist with maintaining necessary and accurate maintenance records on all vehicles . Keep the Fleet Manager informed as to maintenance conditions of vehicles, equipment, and facilities. Respond off-duty, when directed, for emergency repairs. Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License endorsement within six months of hire. Drive district vehicles and operate maintenance machinery. Perform general maintenance work in order to maintain work areas and equipment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Assist with purchasing of required items in accordance with district policies, operational guidelines, and budget controls. Attend meetings and training sessions, as required by local, state, and contractual requirements. Uphold high standards of quality and craftsmanship in all work performed. Perform related duties as assigned. The position shall have demonstrated the ability and/or skill to effectively: Use tact and courtesy with the public, co-workers, and vendors. Communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing. Operate multi-function phone system, computer with standard office suite, email, etc. Utilize district computer systems to effectively communicate and manage maintenance records. Travel between various worksites, in order to fulfill the needs of the District. Organize and accomplish work assignments with minimal supervision. Carry out assignments in a timely manner that fulfills the mission and needs of the District. Diagnose mechanical problems/defects and recognize potential mechanical/system failures. Cut, weld and solder applicable metals for reshaping with reference to light repairs and/or rearrangement of certain district vehicles for better operations. Maintain technical knowledge of automotive and truck diesel and gasoline engines, fuel systems, drive train components, positive displacement and centrifugal pumps, valves, controls theory and design, electrical theory and application, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, brakes, steering, suspension, cooling systems and automotive apparatus design. Demonstrate and maintain knowledge of parts and supplies availability, quality and pricing. Demonstrate and maintain knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and record keeping. Use various hand and power tools required to perform the duties of the position in a safe and proper manner.Minimum:
High school diploma or equivalent Two years minimum experience in repair and maintenance of diesel and gasoline powered automotive apparatus Valid Washington State driver's licenseDesired:
Completion of a training program in diesel and/or automotive maintenance and repair at a recognized state accredited trade school or community college; including Automotive Service Excellence certifications. Additional three years' experience with fire service equipment including pumpers, ladder trucks, medic units, staff and utility vehicles. The position shall have the demonstrated physical ability to: Frequently lift, pull, hoist and move objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift, pull, hoist and move objects weighing over 100 pounds. Stand on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Work in inclement weather. Bend, reach, crawl, kneel, climb and assume a variety of awkward positions in order to access all areas of the District's vehicles, facilities, and equipment for maintenance and repair operations. Inspect and observe the operation and condition of the District's vehicles, equipment and facilities before, during, and after maintenance and repair operations.
