Candidates must have experience in all phases of troubleshooting, diagnostics and general repairs of diesel heavy equipment and trucks. Candidates will be expected to perform work on DPW fleet as well as various other types of municipal vehicles and equipment. Candidate may work with crews to perform duties such as operating heavy equipment, truck driving and manual labor in the field. Candidates may be required to work evening and weekend hours and are required to participate in winter operations and be part of an on-call rotating list. Knowledge Knowledge of the principles, procedures, methods and techniques involved in the repair and maintenance of gas- and diesel-powered motor vehicles and equipment; Must have a general knowledge and understanding of the repair of electrical and hydraulic systems; Thorough knowledge of safe repair practices is required; and Working knowledge of welding, body work and computer skills are a plus. Ability Significant mechanical abilities are required to repair and maintain a variety of motorized equipment; Ability to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic problems and determine appropriate, cost-effect solutions; Ability to operate light and heavy motorized equipment is a must; Ability to use standard and special mechanic's tools; and Ability to follow detailed written instructions and repair manuals. Skill Skill in the use and care of tools employed in automotive repair; Skill in operating above-mentioned equipment; and Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with other town employees and a variety of outside repair and service vendors. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED; At least 5 years of experience repairing and working with heavy and light diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment; or Equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to report to work within 60 minutes of being called in, including during inclement weather. Special Requirements Possession of a Class B Driver's License and Airbrake Endorsement; and Possession of a 2B Hydraulics License, or ability to obtain within six months of employment. Certified diesel mechanics are preferred. Details This is a full-time 40 hour a week benefited position and part of a Collective Bargaining Unit. The hours for this position change throughout the year; the schedule from May 1st to November 15th are 6AM - 4PM, 4 days a week and the hours the rest of the year are 7AM - 3PM. The hourly rate is $24.60 to $34.05 per hour (rate is based on work experience and licenses).
