Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY/SCOPE
The Medical Assistant (MA) provides both clinical and administrative support in a rural health clinic, working directly with healthcare providers to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care. This position is essential for assisting with patient intake, conducting basic diagnostic tests, managing medical records, and performing routine clinical tasks, such as administering medications after physician approval, assisting with exams, and providing patient education. The MA also performs occasional front-office duties to ensure the clinic operates smoothly and efficiently.

Clinical Support:
Patient Intake:
Collect patient medical histories, verify medications, allergies, and current health concerns. Measure and record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration) and document findings accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Assist in
Medical Examinations:
Prepare patients for physical exams by explaining procedures, ensuring comfort, and positioning patients as needed. Assist physicians during examinations and minor medical procedures.
Diagnostic Tests:
Perform basic diagnostic procedures, including blood draws, EKGs, urine tests, and other laboratory tests as directed by physicians or providers.
Medication Administration:
Administer medications (oral, injectable, or topical) after being checked off by a physician and as per the clinic's guidelines. Monitors for any adverse reactions and documents all administered medications accurately.
Wound Care & First Aid:
Assist with minor wound care, dressing changes, and other basic first aid treatments under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
Patient Education:
Educate patients about their health conditions, prescribed treatments, medications, and preventive care measures, ensuring they understand instructions and follow-ups.
Infection Control:
Adhere to all infection control procedures, including sanitizing equipment, managing patient rooms, and ensuring proper hand hygiene and personal protective equipment use.
Administrative Support:
Inventory Management:
Help monitor medical supplies, provide nurse with list of necessary supplies to order, and ensure the clinic is stocked with essential items.
Communication & Team Support:
Team Collaboration:
Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other clinic staff to provide coordinated patient care and ensure smooth clinic operations. Participate in staff meetings to discuss patient care, policies, and clinic improvements.
Patient Communication:
Communicate effectively with patients to ensure they feel supported and informed about their health needs. Provide clear instructions for follow-up appointments, medications, and any lifestyle modifications recommended by providers.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and healthcare regulations. Proficient in using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems. Ability to perform clinical tasks, such as taking vitals, administering injections, conducting basic diagnostic tests, and providing patient education. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a busy clinic environment. Knowledge of infection control procedures and patient confidentiality regulations (HIPAA). Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team. Compassionate, empathetic, and patient-oriented demeanor. The ability to adapt to the unique challenges of working in a rural healthcare setting, where resources may be limited. Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Previous experience as a Medical Assistant, preferably in a rural, primary care, or family practice setting. (Preferred but not required) High school diploma or equivalent. BLS required or obtained within 90 days of hire. CCMA preferred but not required. Must enroll in hospital approved CCMA course within 90 days of hire and complete course within 12 months.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, and assist with patient mobility for extended periods. Ability to lift or assist in lifting patients as necessary. Ability to transport medical equipment and supplies within the clinic.
