Job Description

Company Description Standard Steel is a leading manufacturer of forged steel wheels and axles for freight railcars, locomotives and passenger railcars. It is the only producer of forged steel wheels for railcars and locomotives in North America. Customers include major Class I railroads in North America, freight railcar builders, railcar and locomotive maintenance shops, the Amtrak national railroad, locomotive builders and regional transit authorities. Standard Steel, LLC, and its affiliated companies were purchased by Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. and Sumitomo Corporation in 2011, but the existing facility has been producing forgings since 1795. In 2012, Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. merged with Nippon Steel Corporation to become Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, the majority owner of Standard Steel. Standard Steel's manufacturing plant is located at 500 North Walnut Street in Burnham, Pennsylvania.
Job Description Summary Function:
Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of hourly Team Members to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Melt Shop processes, including scrap yard, melting, refining, degassing, and casting steel from scrap into ingots. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, oversight of the Scrap Handling Machines, Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Furnace/Vacuum Degasser, overhead cranes, torch cutoff equipment, and ladle maintenance systems. Plan and align team efforts, monitor performance and operating conditions, and make real-time adjustments to optimize safety, quality, and productivity. Identify and analyze significant issues, implement or recommend corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. Collaborate closely with and report to the Melt Shop Superintendent(s) while maintaining accurate and timely operational records and reports.
Responsibilities:
Direct the work activities of all hourly Team Members in each work unit within the Melt Shop to include the scrap yard, EAF, teeming pits, LFVD, crane operators, annex cranes, and torches and utilities. Ensure all Team Members are trained properly on all safe work procedures, operational procedures, Company rules, and provide feedback as necessary. Plan and discuss melting operations with Melt Shop Superintendent(s) and Melt Shop Manager as necessary. Coordinate melting operations with activities of all other sections and Departments. Attend section and Department meetings, determine equipment capabilities and limitations, and coordinate maintenance of all facilities. Counsel with and report to the Melt Shop Manager concerning problems, results, conditions, productivity, and costs. Maintain required number of qualified Team Members, supplies, materials, and services. Provide and maintain clean, safe, orderly working conditions, standards, and controls. Review major problem areas, determine solutions, or recommend corrective action. Efficiently utilize facilities, alloys, and equipment to obtain necessary quality and quantity of steel. Personally supervise and follow new grades, melting practices, and implement improvements. Designate economical scraps or alloys to achieve desired quality. Establish proper temperatures, maintain heat records to effect improvements, enforce safety regulations, and make monthly safety contacts. Perform other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications Required:
Post High School education. Bachelor's Degree in Technical curriculum preferred. Experience in directing the work activities of hourly Team Members in a manufacturing environment. Experience in melting operations of five years or more. Steel industry preferred. Excellent people skills. The ability to motivate hourly Team Members to accomplish production and quality objectives safely. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to understand mechanical functions of production equipment and the technical aspects of making the product; ability to read blue prints. Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar applications.
