Molecular Laboratory Technician Job Overview:
The Microbiology & Molecular Technician's primary goal at Alpha is to perform RT-qPCR testing on urine and wound samples, and then analyze these sample's culture growth. They are expected to follow all the rigid guidelines necessary to comply with CLIA and COLA standards, to ensure the output of proper patient results.Responsibilities:
Visually identify specific bacterial colonies and ensure their proper isolation. Use confirmatory tests to solidify your visual inspection. Load all sample isolates onto the MicroScan machine, and adeptly analyze its output to confirm that the antibiotic susceptibility is correct. Be responsible for reporting all infectious disease isolates to their respective state health laboratories. Perform molecular RT-qPCR testing utilizing Marina and Atila extraction and primer systems. Ensure the proper handling and assembly of all tests to pass all rigid quality control checks. Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results. Maintain records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and documenting all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance. Follow the laboratory's policies whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications• Perform moderate and high complexity testing under the on-site direct supervision of a general supervisor. Keep the laboratory and all equipment clean. Prepare the laboratory equipment and specimens for tests. Analyze and record test results in order to issue reports that utilize graphs, charts, and narratives. Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly. Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols. Identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel. Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations. Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential. Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and JCAHO standards. Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.• Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage. Operates, calibrates and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis.Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant chemical, physical, or biological science or equivalent work experience. Experience working in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred. Knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular PCR concepts. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently or as part of a team.
