Qualifications Required Delaware State Certification as a Reading Specialist, Middle Level ELA Teacher, or eligibility. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Commitment to Sussex Academy's mission, vision, and core values. Preferred Previous middle school teaching or reading intervention experience. Experience with PLCs, data-driven instruction, and differentiated learning. Familiarity with MTSS and student support systems. Experience with structured literacy practices and literacy intervention programs. Position Overview Sussex Academy seeks a dynamic and student-centered educator to serve as a Middle School English Language Arts Teacher. This position plays a critical role in advancing the school's vision to be a premier Kâ€"12 school system in the state of Delaware by supporting a culture of academic excellence, strong character, and continuous improvement. The Middle School English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for providing targeted, research-based reading instruction and intervention while contributing to a coherent K-12 system of curriculum, instruction and assessment. This role is essential in supporting literacy development, closing achievement gaps, and ensuring all students are on a path forward toward reading proficiency and long-term academic success. Primary Responsibilities Instruction & Student Learning Develop targeted, research-based reading instruction and intervention aligned to student needs. Use diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to identify skill gaps and monitor progress Analyze student data to inform instruction and adjust interventions accordingly Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners within the MTSS framework Support the development of foundational and advanced literacy skills, including fluency, comprehension, and written response Collaborate with ELA and content-area teachers to reinforce literacy skills across the curriculum Culture & Classroom Environment Promote a safe, inclusive, and student-centered classroom environment aligned with Sussex Academy's core values of Community, Integrity, Leadership, Respect, and Trust. Establish clear expectations that support a positive and productive learning environment Build student confidence and engagement in reading through supportive and responsive instruction Foster a culture of leadership by encouraging student ownership of learning Collaboration & Professional Learning Collaborate with colleagues in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to align curriculum, analyze student data, and strengthen instructional practices. Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and school initiatives that support continuous improvement and organizational coherence. Engage in ongoing professional learning related to literacy instruction and intervention. Student Support & Family Engagement Maintain accurate records of student progress and intervention outcomes Communicate effectively with students and families regarding progress and next steps Partner with staff and families to support student academic and social-emotional growth Operations & School Responsibilities Supervise students in classrooms and school-related activities Support administration of state and local assessments Utilize instructional technology and data systems to support teaching and learning Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean of the Middle School or school administration Essential Functions & Competencies Demonstrated ability to deliver targeted and effective reading instruction Ability to analyze and use student data to inform decisions Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families Ability to contribute to a collaborative and professional school culture Commitment to continuous professional growth Physical and Work Environment Works in a standard classroom and school environment.
