Job Description

Reports to:
Deputy Director of Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo Status:
Non-Exempt, 12-month, Part-Time, must work weekends and some holidays, occasional evenings as needed The Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo is one of the smallest zoological facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and has an excellent history of meeting the standards of education, conservation, research and recreation that are required by the organization. These things are only possible when the staff work together as a team and often play many roles on that team. We all strive for excellence in everything we do, that we take personal ownership of the facility as a whole and especially in our areas of expertise, and finally that we strive to maintain an atmosphere of professionalism, respect, and courtesy toward each other and our students and visitors. The Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo is a service-oriented facility. It is imperative that all staff recognize that they represent Millbrook School and the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo, both on and off campus and that excellent customer relations are the key to a successful program. Our customers uniquely come from both the public and our internal school community. The success of advancement opportunities for the zoo starts with the first impression by our visitors.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain a high standard of retail service at the Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo Mill. Maintain a high level of cleanliness and presentation in retail displays, storage areas, office areas and the exterior of the building. Provide friendly & informative customer service. Must answer phone calls and be knowledgeable about zoo topics such as animal rehab, visiting hours & directions, etc. Interact professionally with visitors upon their arrival and when they are shopping. Maintain professional interactions with colleagues, student volunteers, and public visitors. Strive to support Millbrook School/Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo's core values of respect, integrity, service (to others), stewardship of the natural world, and curiosity. Perform standard business operations at the Mill. Operate the cash register and accurately provide change. Accurately account for daily earnings. Follow honest and safe cash and credit card procedures. Restock retail shelves. Provide guests with proper information on how to schedule birthday parties, group visits or purchase a membership. Answer the phone and provide guests with information to the best of your ability. Perform other duties as assigned. Must work weekend days and some holidays.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Computer skills including Word, Excel, Point of Sale system (knowledge of media players and iTunes helpful) Excellent communication skills for interactions with the public both in person and on the phone. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language. Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. Must have the ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others. Must be able to follow written and oral instructions. Must have patience, tact, and enthusiasm when dealing with personnel, students, and family members. Must be proficient in composition of written communication.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS
(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices) Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Must be able to stand for the majority of the day. Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner. Must work in and around animal spaces (all species) and animal spaces with hay regularly. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position. Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met. Must be able to work in person. Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with others. Must be able to operate a cash register and computer. Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move inventory without restrictions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works in Trevor-Lovejoy Zoo Mill area as well as throughout the campus. Ability to work in person, on site for all scheduled shifts. Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours. Subjected to frequent interruptions. Is involved with visitors, students, family members, personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances. The salary for this position is: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour. Placement in the salary range is based on experience, education and all other factors permitted by law.
