Job Description
Position Summary The Mining Engineering Intern will be exposed to all aspects of gypsum mining operations, including drilling, surface milling, hauling, reclamation, and environmental compliance. This position provides hands-on experience supporting both mine and plant operations while working closely with management and operations personnel. The Mining Engineering Intern will assist with projects focused on safety, production efficiency, cost control, and regulatory compliance. This role is designed for individuals pursuing a career in mining or heavy industrial operations and offers practical experience in a fast-paced mining environment. The candidate must be motivated, safety-focused, and interested in developing the technical and operational skills necessary for a future role in mining or plant management. Regular Duties Establish and maintain safe working conditions and follow all safety procedures. Assist with daily mining operations including drilling, surface milling coordination, and material hauling. Support mine planning activities including mapping, surveying, and data collection. Assist with tracking and analyzing production and equipment performance metrics. Work with mine and plant personnel to identify and implement operational improvements. Support environmental compliance and reclamation activities. Support MSHA compliance activities. Assist in coordinating contractors and monitoring field work. Participate in root cause analysis and problem-solving for operational issues. Develop working knowledge of mining equipment, processes, and safety requirements. Assist with capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives. Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation. Learn and apply company policies, procedures, and safety standards. All other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or related technical field (Geological, Civil, Mechanical, etc.). Strong interest in mining operations and heavy industrial environments. Ability to work effectively in both field and office settings. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Basic computer skills (Excel, Word, and data analysis tools preferred). Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities. Self-motivated with a willingness to learn. Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities. Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Essential Functions SAFETY Actively participate in all safety programs and initiatives. Follow MSHA regulations and company safety policies. Promote a safe working environment at all times. QUALITY Assist in maintaining material quality standards and consistency of mined gypsum. Support quality improvement initiatives.
TRAINING
Learn mining processes, equipment, and safety procedures. Seek opportunities to expand technical and operational knowledge.PRODUCTION
Support daily mining operations to meet production targets. Assist in monitoring and improving operational efficiency.PLANT & MINE AVAILABILITY
Assist in identifying operational issues and support troubleshooting efforts to minimize downtime.MAINTENANCE
Support proper use and care of mining equipment. Assist with inspections and reporting of equipment issues.COMPANY POLICIES
Follow and uphold all company policies and procedures. Demonstrate professionalism and accountability.MINE KNOWLEDGE
Develop an understanding of mining methods, geology, equipment, and reclamation practices. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an outdoor mining environment with some office work. Exposure to heavy equipment, dust, noise, and varying weather conditions. Typical schedule is Monday - Friday; hours may vary based on operational needs. Occasional extended hours or weekend work may be required.
