Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
Supervising Kansas Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Inspectors in an assigned zone or work area to ensure adequate enforcement of Kansas traffic and criminal laws, as they pertain to Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). This is accomplished by leading, directing, and participating with Motor Carrier Inspectors in line level patrol and scale house activities; reviewing and correcting documents and reports, completing work schedules, coordinating special assignments, and keeping their immediate supervisor informed on the daily operations of the work group. Manages office activities for the work group in order to ensure compliance with agency rules, policies and directives. This is accomplished by establishing task completion dates, maintaining files, procuring and distributing supplies. Attends and instructs training as needed. Conducts inspections of vehicles and files in order to ensure function, cleanliness and compliance with agency rules and regulations. Maintains fixed facilities within Troop by ensuring required maintenance is completed in a timely manner. Completes unit and special performance evaluations on assigned personnel. Counsels subordinates on strengths and weaknesses as well as encouraging employees in their day to day work activities. Displays genuine interest in the health and safety of employees. Interprets and assists subordinates in gaining an understanding of agency rules and regulations, as well as laws pertaining to enforcement. Resolves work group needs and problems in a fair manner. At the scale house, incumbent enforces the Statutes of the State of Kansas as they pertain to CMVs and their movements on the roadways of Kansas, to include enforcement of over-weights, in order to improve the safety of the public by: manning a fixed weigh station, issuing citations and warnings, inspecting CMVs, investigating incidents, aiding disabled motorists, and providing emergency medical services For a full position description email request to KHP.Career@KS.GOV , please include the Job ID #.
Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Licensing & Certification:
Valid Driver's License. CVSA Level I, General Hazardous Materials, Cargo Tank and Other Non-Bulk certified. Must complete supervisory training within 12 months of promotion. Must successfully complete and maintain certifications as detailed in Agency policy.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Positions in this class require that the employee have a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Level I certification. In addition, positions in this class require Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) certifications in General Hazardous Materials, Cargo Tank Inspection and Other Non-Bulk Packaging. Incumbent must attain all certifications within one year of assignment.

Must be able to run, walk, kneel, stand for extended periods of time, sit for extended periods, get in and out of vehicles, bend, squat, stoop, twist, reach with body, arms and/or legs, push, pull, stretch, drive, grasp, speak clearly, listen and comprehend verbal and written instructions, climb on and crawl under and around trucks, and shovel snow; key for typing, and occasionally lift 30 lbs or more.
