We currently have a preschool and K-8 program at two locations. This position is for the K-8 program. We are looking for a Math Guide to work ~3 hours a day. Class is Monday-Friday 12:00-3:00. We are an outdoor school with some open aired classroom spaces. Math is currently held in our gazebo classroom. Classes are multiage with grades K-8 with a limit of 15 students. The classes are roughly broken into three groups K-2 grade (pups) and 3-5th grade (cavies) and 5th-8th grade (Alphas) During the math class, another teacher will be teaching the other group literacy. Then you switch groups for the second hour. You will teach the Alphas in math for 55 minutes and then the Cavies. Within each age group you will need to scaffold lessons and teach multiple levels. Our current math teacher will guide you in some strategies that have worked for them. Our teaching philosophy aligns with Montessori and Waldorf, this guides our instruction and decisions. It's essential that you are comfortable teaching groups of mixed ages and can differentiate curriculum. There will be mentorship of a teacher who has a certificate in Montessori and has 17 years teaching. It's not required to have experience with these teaching philosophies. We highly value social justice issues and use students play and work as opportunities to teach about inclusion, differing abilities, problem solving, sharing resources, checking our own power and influence on other students, inviting other who are on the outside to join the play, being aware of the opportunities and bringing balance by inviting or checking in. Social emotional intelligence is essential with this age group. Our school is very strong on community and building intentional relationships. Teachers are expected to connect to families and become a larger part through monthly potlucks and work parties. Chavitos Nature School programs are distinguished by: A commitment to daily outdoor nature exploration and opportunities Child interest-led learning Emergent curriculum- we follow the child's interests and teach with snapshot moments. Inquiry-based teaching style An emphasis on authentic play Small class size: Each class is limited to 20 students. We will have a 2:10 ratio.
Spanish immersion:
at least one teacher will speak exclusively Spanish to children. Ideally both teachers will speak Spanish. We believe that children, learn best through direct experience with the natural world. Our goal is to tap into their sense of wonder about nature, while teaching basic environmental and natural science principles. We promote individual empowerment and group bonding, respect for all living beings, and how to minimize our impact on the earth. Our lesson plans flow organically from what nature presents each day. We have a high value of diversity of all types. We enroll students who add diversity to our community and this includes teachers as well. Leadership Team :
Join our team to help inform and guide our community. We meet on a 'as needed' basis to discuss student growth, problem solve any parental or program concerns, and plan and organize for current or future student needs. Meet approximately once every 4-6 weeks, or more often as needed. Meeting last 1.5-2 hours during a mutually agreed upon time, outside of program hour Paid at your teaching rate/hour.
Outreach Coordinator :
This position is well-suited for candidates who enjoy organizing and exploring all our area has to offer and connecting with our community in and outside of our program. Plans, coordinates and communicates monthly field trips for the whole program and our oldest students (Alphas), Plans, coordinates and communicates with guest speakers, and seasonal celebrations (equinoxes and solstices).
Student Support Liaison :
This position is well-suited for candidates with Special Education backgrounds, who can provide support to families when they have questions about their child's developmental and educational needs. Familiarity with individualized education plans (IEP), child development and neurodiversity is highly desired. Communicates with families, often 1:1, regarding parenting needs to bridge the gap between home and school. Supports teaching staff to ensure all students are provided equitable access to our learning spaces and lessons, often by answering questions or offering insight how to meet the needs of our diverse population of learners.
Position Hours and Days:
Monday-Thursday 11:55-3:00 •Can be combined with our K-2 electives guide position which teaches Monday-Friday 8:45-12:00. Each class is ~55 minutes long. The pups class has a workcycle from 12:40-2:35 and guide gives them an extra movement during this block of time.
Location :
Currently 14005 51st Ave East, Tacoma WA 98446, but we will be moving and starting in a new location in the fall. This is still being determined as we are looking for our Forever Home. We are looking around the Waller/Summit area.
Schedule :
Note:
Overall, our program is very flexible and creative when creating our guides schedules, so please let us know if you have a specific time need. 11:55: On-duty guides will monitor and support lunch and movement classes. A quick transitional meeting between morning electives teachers and academic teachers takes place during this time. We only need 2 guides during this time so one guide could start at 12:30. The Cavies and Alphas math teacher will rotate classes with the literacy teacher. For example they will start with the Alpha group from 12:40-1:35. Then have the Cavies group from 1:35-2:35. Total hours Monday-Thursday is 11:55-2:45 or 3:00. We only need 1 other guide to stay until 3:00 to support pups who need more support during the closing meeting which is 2:45-3:00. This position can combine with Fridays (Full day 8:45-2:45 or part day 11:55-2:45) or (8:45-12:00) if you want more hours. •Can add additional hours for Leadership Team, Outreach Coordinator, and Student Liaison.
Dates of Employment :
K-8 Program Orientation at site September 9th 10:00-12:00. Whole Program Staff Orientation September 10th 10:00-1:00. School Year- September 14th, 2026 - June 11th, 2027. With possible weather make-ups the week of June 14th-18th.
Please note:
Winter break is 4 full weeks and our spring break is two full weeks. Our family uses this month in the winter for traveling home to Guatemala.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Prepare academic lessons for assigned age group. Prepare the environment and lessons before class. Guide children through lessons using program curriculum of: Wild Math, Mammoth Math, Blossom and Root, Rhythm and Roots, Brain Friendly Reading curriculum for whole group standard lessons and individual conferences and small group lessons using the math standards. Supporting students as they do their individual lesson practice using games and projects. Be familiar with and use the academic standards for each grade level. Be able to adjust a lesson to a lower or higher level to meet the individual child's needs. Build relationships to create an engaging and challenging learning environment when students want to take risks. Use positive classroom management, declarative language, scaffolding their learning, and facilitating social-emotional growth during each lesson. If possible be familiar with Montessori materials or spend the time reading the lessons before a lesson and asking Meag for support when needed. Support students through common challenges, including but not limited to: emotional regulation, communication, peer problem solving skills, needs, etc. Actively contribute to risk management in an outdoor setting; being watchful and responsive to weather, unsafe student behaviors, hazardous plants and animals, and additional safety concerns. Collaborate with the director by reflecting on teaching practice, and goal-setting for students and as a teaching team. This will occur during the staff meetings, and informally each day during a quick meeting.. Participate in all school orientation and a specific location orientation (prior to the start of the school year). Play, explore, laugh, and learn alongside children in nature, in all weather, year round. Become an integral member of the Chavitos teaching team who trust, challenge, and communicate with one another. Provide additional support in family communication as needed. Through twice a year conferences, and emails/phone calls as needed. Use part of your planning hours to communicate to parents weekly by sharing photos on Cluster Photo Share and also a weekly learning points email sent on Fridays. Use part of your planning hours to communicate to parents as needed with standards or observations. Let parents know if the standards are being taught. Use assignments, activities,games and observations to tell if the students have passed a units standards. If not, make a plan for reteaching and expand the activity for students who have met the standard. Communicate this progress with the director and parents when finishing a unit.
Qualifications :
Must pass a background check before interacting with the students Previous experience working with K-8 year olds teaching academics- teaching certificate or a Montessori or Waldorf Certification highly desired. Previous experience in leading and managing a multi-age class Strong conflict resolution, collaboration, and problem solving skills Brings patience, joy, and curiosity in working with children Ability and desire to work outdoors rain, cold, wind, snow, or shine As we are outside for long periods of time in all weather, outdoor gear is a must to stay warm and dry. Please let us know if this is a barrier for you. Depending on funding, we may be able to offer a small stipend to help get you set up with good, quality gear.
