Love what you do; Love where you live The Student Intern is an observer that is introduced to specific healthcare career(s) through the supervised observation of a healthcare provider. Interns will have the chance to observe healthcare professionals and learn about various medical procedures. This program is designed to provide students with a better understanding of healthcare careers and to help them develop essential skills for future academic and professional pursuits.

Required Qualifications:
  • Students must be at least sixteen (16) years old
  • Students must be exploring careers in healthcare, allied health or hospital services.
  • Two (2) MMR Immunizations OR a positive MMR titer
  • A PPD current within the last twelve (12) months
  • Written documentation of chicken pox OR immune varicella titer OR documentation of two (2) varicella vaccines
  • Flu shot for current year (if shadowing/observing anytime during the months of October through March)
  • TB test within 30 days
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Program faculty or appropriately trained staff will provide oversight of all student activities
  • Students are not permitted to perform any patient care activity or perform skills that have not been validated first in the academic setting
  • All students are responsible for implementing SJRMC's Service Standards into their activities
Administrative Support:
  • Assist with general office tasks such as filing, photocopying, data entry, and answering phones.
Observation:
  • Observe healthcare professionals in their daily duties, including doctors, nurses, and technicians.
Shadowing:
  • Shadow healthcare professionals in various departments to gain firsthand experience.
Patient Services:
Greet and assist patients and visitors
Special Projects:
  • Assist with special projects or initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications:
  • Experience over the billing, collections, admissions or financial counseling activities in a hospital or health care agency
Knowledge of:
the principles and practices involved in billing, admitting and credit and collection activities; laws, rules,
  • Ability to: organize, coordinate and supervise the work of direct reports; develop instructional materials; analyze situations and recommend appropriate actions; establish and maintain effective work relationships with other departments of hospital, fiscal intermediary/insurance company representative and vendors, prepare clear and concise written reports
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Computer experience
  • Ability to speak, read and write in English
  • Strong communication skills: verbal and listening, primarily in telephone conversation, and written
  • Ability to interface ethically and professionally with all levels of management
  • Demonstrates ability to deliver quality work within tight deadlines
  • Independent decision making and discretion
  • Knowledge of third party reimbursement methodologies, especially in hospital setting
  • Knowledge of
CPT/HCPCS
coding regulations and policies affecting patient accounts functions; the principles and techniques of supervision, staff utilization and training
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Three (3) years' experience in health care or insurance
  • Previous Meditech experience
Medical Terminology Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Effectively recruit, train, develop, evaluate, motivate, delegate and monitor direct reports' activities. Utilize appropriate staff disciplinary practices for corrective action and improved performance and workplace behaviors
  • Organize, coordinate, and direct the activities within Patient Financial Services, including insurance follow-up, self-pay
  • Understand, follow, and inform staff of SJRMC facility, division and departmental policies and procedures
  • Manage and control departmental expenditures within budget
  • Formulate and revise policies and procedures to insure the most efficient methods of billing fiscal intermediaries and maximizing collection of delinquent accounts are achieved
  • Provides technical guidance to staff on most difficult and complex work of unit; coordinates with other hospital departments, County/State/Federal departments and external fiscal intermediaries to ensure accurate flow of information and to solve mutual problems
  • Work with PFS leadership team peers to coordinate workflows, system capabilities, and drive results
  • Analyzes and prepares a variety of detailed financial and statistical reports collections, county indigent program, Indian Health Service collections, collection agency management, any extended business office operations (outsourced follow-up) community service fund administration and bad debt write-off management
  • Each employee is responsible for implementing SJRMC's Service Standards into their daily work: Safety, Courtesy, Effectiveness, and Stewardship
