Job Description

JOB LOCATION
The primary work location for this position will be at the Beyond Boundaries program located at the Father Devine Community Center in Bloomsburg, PA. This position will require travel to teach at two additional Beyond Boundaries Programs located at: CSIU Main Office - 90 Lawton Lane, Milton, PA 17847 Northumberland County Career and Technology Center - 1700 W. Montgomery St, Coal Township, PA 17866 ORGANIZATIONAL
RELATIONSHIP
The Non-traditional Education Teacher reports directly to the Director of Behavioral Health Support Services and in his/her absence, to the Chief Academic Officer.
JOB DEFINITION
The Non-traditional Education Teacher will be responsible for the daily instruction in all secondary subjects for students enrolled in the non-traditional education support program to which they are assigned, based on individual need.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop and implement methods of instruction and curriculum of planned courses in those subjects typically found within a secondary school setting. Develop and implement a remedial program in core-content subject matter to provide instruction to those areas when appropriate. Provide skills the students can employ to successfully compete in their home school districts upon their return from the program. Develop and implement a program of instruction designed to provide real-life experiences (set-up checking accounts; pay bills, write resumes, etc.) for students. Provide support, pacing, and accommodations for students enrolled in virtual courses. Act as teacher-of-record for virtual courses for which the teacher in this role holds the appropriate certificate area(s) by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). Maintain close contact with the other teachers, school counselors and sending schools. Maintain exact attendance figures and report these to the CSIU on a monthly basis. Provide quarterly grade reports to the districts from which the students attend. Work cooperatively with the teaching staff to jointly meet the needs of the individual students. Maintain appropriate records on students referred into the program. Discuss the program's expectations with all students when they are enrolled in a program. Contact appropriate individuals who can provid additional information to meet instructional needs. Establish field trip experiences for all students, when and where appropriate. Complete monthly reports of attendance and program activity highlights. Work cooperatively with county agencies, school district personnel, area vocational-technical schools, area universities and CSIU staff to maximize effective and efficient operation of the non-traditional education program. Be technology/computer literate and be able to instruct students in basic computer and virtual course use. Attend training seminars and in-service programs identified as important to the operation of an effective instructional program.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED
: A Bachelor's degree in an education field is required. A valid Pennsylvania teacher certification reflecting appropriate certification in the subject area(s) in which teacher is assigned is required. Previous experience as an educator / teacher working with at-risk youth is preferred. A demonstrated ability to work with at-risk populations; and certification to perform safe physical management are required. Possess an understanding of state and federal regulations as they pertain to education. Possess the ability to direct, control, plan, and use good judgment and communicate effectively to stimulate learning. Maintain confidentiality regarding education programs, students and parents at all times adhering to the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requirements to protect staff and student data. Demonstrated organizational, written and oral communications skills are essential. Highly effective interpersonal skills, teamwork and an ability to function independently required Effective operation of personal computers and email is an essential part of this position. Experience in social services with families or mental health is beneficial. Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are necessary to properly maintain open channels of communication with agencies, school districts, parents, members of higher education institutions, etc. Possess a functional knowledge of positive behavior management approaches. Must have ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues, co-workers, community agency personnel, and students/trainees. Requires the ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and to remain calm in unpredictable situations.
ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS
Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry) and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015). Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours training every five (5) years.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS
Maintain PDE certification requirements of Act 48 hours for the Professional Education Records Management System (PERMS) specific five (5) year periods. In accordance with PA Chapter 14.133, staff will participate in training/certifications regarding behavior prevention, de-escalation, Safe Crisis Management Theory, Suicide Prevention/Intervention, and First Aid/CPR is required. Attendance at training seminars and in-service programs identified as important to the operation of an effective instruction program. Participation in workshops/seminars to increase knowledge in special education. Participation in workshops/seminars to increase computer skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
: Perform light health/physical education activities with the students including bending, light exercise, throwing, hitting a ball, etc. Physically separate fighting students if this should occur. Navigate the hallways (which may be filled with students) quickly in the event of an altercation.
Sedentary:
Able to sit for extended periods of time, occasional walking, standing (as necessary) and able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds alone or up to 50 pounds assisted. Ability to lift and reposition students of varying weight is critical. Considerable bending, stooping, kneeling, and squatting must be tolerated.
Dexterity:
Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.).
Audio-Visual Requirements:
Within normal range with or without correction. Is able to move throughout all buildings, floors and grounds.
Worksite Environment:
Primarily indoors-office setting with occasional exposure to outdoor elements/climate during the day.
Mental demands:
Steady response to unpredictable situations, ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations. Demonstrates independent judgment, discretion and is able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS
This is a full time, exempt position working 188 day teacher contract and follows the schedule for which the position is assigned. Position involves working a 7.5 hours per day with a specific starting and ending times to be established through the Director of Behavioral Health Support. Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor. Occasional overnight travel to seminars or training may be required.
CSIU PROPERTY AND CONFIDENTIALITY REQUIREMENTS
All property, including intellectual property, materials, equipment or actual products and services developed or accrued as part of the job duties and responsibilities listed above, is the property of the CSIU. It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the CSIU upon termination of employment from the CSIU. The person employed in this position shall maintain confidentiality with regard to the personal and private information about clients and co-workers, programs and services, and any other proprietary information accrued as a result of CSIU employment or as required by state or federal laws and regulations. The person employed in this position must adhere to all requirements identified in the code of professionalism entitled "Ambassadors Are Professionals, Too" and CSIU Administrative Regulation 317-AR-1 CSIU Service Standards. The position holder must be able to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
