ROLE STATEMENT FOR LIFEGUARD
Ensures patron safety within the vicinity of the pool facility; performs other duties as required or assigned.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The principal function of an employee in this class is to ensure patron safety within the pool center facility. An employee in this classification must hold their Lifeguard certification through the American Red Cross. In addition, the employee must maintain certifications in First Aid and CPR. An employee at this level is qualified to work as a lifeguard. The above certifications do not qualify an employee to act as a swimming lesson instructor or a Head Guard. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, members of community service groups, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed at a pool facility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Maintains a clean and safe swimming facility, including clearing the pool deck of potentially dangerous objects and vacuuming the pool when necessary.
  • Monitors the safety of the pool, including administering First-Aid and CPR when necessary, testing water quality and chemical balance, monitoring pool equipment, and performing minor maintenance repairs as required.
  • Performs life-saving and guarding duties, including assisting patrons in life-threatening situations, enforcing pool rules and regulations daily for the efficient and safe operation of the pool, providing active accident prevention, and monitoring patrons to make sure they are physically capable of being in the water.
  • Maintains current certifications in all required areas, and accepts responsibility for renewing certifications.
  • Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
General knowledge of swimming and lifeguard-saving techniques. General knowledge of basic First-Aid and CPR. General knowledge of injury prevention and treatment. General knowledge of stabilization of victims with spinal cord injuries.
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Ability to remain calm and act in a professional manner at all times. Ability to differentiate between passive and active drowning victims. Ability to use tact and discretion in dealing with the general public. Ability to address uncooperative patrons. Ability to swim 500 yards using a variety of swim strokes. Ability to retrieve objects off the pool floor in a timely manner. Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language, and deal with a wide range of persons. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions, use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions, and prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Working toward a High School Diploma or GED.
Experience:
1 plus year of experience in Swimming Training/Instruction Or any combination of experience and training that provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Certifications & Licenses:
CPR Certification and First Aid Certification. Lifeguard Certification by the American Red Cross.
Other Requirements:
Minimum 16 years of age.
