Obstetric Inpatient Registered Nurse —
OB/GYN Nursing Services Location:
Northern Navajo Medical Center, US Hwy 491 North, Shiprock, NM 87420

12-hour shifts, 7:00 AM/PM to 7:30 PM/AM; 3 shifts one week and 4 shifts the following week, including weekends and holidays as assigned. Position Summary The Obstetric Inpatient Registered Nurse will provide professional nursing services in support of the Indian Health Service mission at the Northern Navajo Medical Center within the Shiprock Service Unit. The RN will support the OB/GYN inpatient unit by delivering safe, timely, culturally respectful, and clinically competent care to labor and delivery patients, postpartum patients, newborns, and other patients as assigned. The RN must be capable of working independently within the scope of professional nursing practice while following facility policies, clinical protocols, HIPAA requirements, and technical direction from the Supervisory Clinical Nurse. The nurse may also be required to float to other nursing departments as needed to support patient care needs. Key Duties and Responsibilities The OB/GYN Registered Nurse shall perform duties including, but not limited to: Labor and Delivery Care Provide nursing care for laboring patients, including admission, assessment, monitoring, documentation, and support during labor and delivery. The RN shall be familiar with care for patients with conditions such as oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, trial of labor after cesarean section, premature rupture of membranes, placental complications, diabetes, hypertensive disorders, fetal distress, fetal demise, and substance use history. The RN shall demonstrate knowledge of oxytocin infusion, magnesium sulfate infusion, blood administration, pain medication, amnioinfusion, labor and delivery documentation, postpartum hemorrhage response, immediate postpartum recovery, circulating as an operating room nurse, and assisting with Jada insertion when required. Postpartum Couplet Care Provide postpartum care to mothers and newborns, including assessment, recovery support, post-operative cesarean section care, newborn assessment, phototherapy support, newborn IV antibiotic infusion, and Jada care after insertion. The RN shall support baby-friendly initiatives and Level I newborn care requirements. Newborn Level II Care Provide care for newborns requiring Level II support, including care for sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, oxygen delivery, IV fluid infusion, glucose monitoring, blood draws, PKU, IM injections, umbilical line support, intubation assistance, and stabilization for transfer when required. Documentation and Compliance Maintain accurate, clear, timely, and legible documentation in accordance with hospital protocols, HIPAA, Privacy Act requirements, IHS policies, and applicable standards of nursing practice. The RN shall properly complete required timesheets and ensure hours worked are accurately recorded for weekly verification. Safety, Professionalism, and Patient Care Maintain a professional appearance and ethical conduct at all times. The RN shall demonstrate effective communication, flexibility, dependability, cultural sensitivity, and a cooperative attitude. The RN must protect patient safety, follow infection control procedures, comply with facility protocols, and immediately report any issue that may affect patient outcomes or violate policy. Required Qualifications Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements: Current, valid, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory. Minimum of 24 months of nursing experience. Minimum of 2 years of experience in the required specialty. Current fetal monitoring certification, including AWHONN. Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification through the American Academy of Pediatrics. Current Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification through the American Heart Association. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English. Basic computer skills and ability to use IHS information technology systems. Ability to complete mandatory orientation, competency validation, and facility-specific training. Ability to pass required background checks and security investigations. Valid state driver's license if required by the position. Health and Immunization Requirements The selected RN must provide required health documentation prior to selection or performance, including: Fitness-for-duty certificate from a licensed physician. Immunity to rubella, mumps, and rubeola. Hepatitis B vaccination series, positive titer, or signed declination. History of chickenpox, varicella vaccination, or positive varicella titer. Tdap vaccination and Td vaccination if required. Tuberculosis testing within the past 12 months. Influenza vaccination during the required seasonal period. Required Competencies The RN must complete and maintain competency in areas including: HIPAA, confidentiality, and patient rights. EMTALA compliance. Medication administration. IV therapy and venipuncture. Pain management. Restraints and patient safety. Age-specific competency. Fetal monitoring. Oxytocin and magnesium sulfate administration. Blood administration. Infection control and PPE. Electronic health record documentation. SBAR handoff communication. Labor and delivery core competencies. Postpartum care. Newborn Level I and Level II care. Discharge planning and patient education. Work Environment Services will be performed in hospitals, clinics, and healthcare facilities within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service, with the primary location being Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, New Mexico. The RN may be assigned to the OB/GYN inpatient department and may float to other departments when needed to support patient care. Performance Expectations The RN is expected to provide safe, compliant, and high-quality nursing care. Performance will be monitored through direct observation, inspection, progress reports, patient care outcomes, documentation quality, professionalism, compliance with policies, and cultural sensitivity. The RN must maintain satisfactory or exceptional performance with no substantiated reports affecting patient safety, infection control, or patient outcomes.
Pay:
$3,711.33 - $4,469.56 per week
