Job Description
The Operations Tech II (Entry) is an entry-level technician with some knowledge of and experience with controlling power-generating equipment and systems. Monitors equipment performance, and maintains equipment as required to ensure acceptable performance. The position works at a Pelican Power plant that generates power from fossil fuels. The technician responds to emergencies and deals with heightened security measures. Power Plant Technicians work rotating 12 hour shifts. Key Responsibilities § Champion a culture of safety, integrity, environmental stewardship, teamwork, diversity and inclusion, operational excellence, and accountability. § Monitor, inspect, and operate plant equipment and systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the generating facility. § Perform local system checks and equipment inspections, including oil checks, sample collection, valve alignments, equipment isolation, and system lineups. § Monitor boilers, turbines, pumps, fans, conveyors, environmental systems, water treatment systems, cooling towers, and auxiliary equipment. § Respond to alarms and abnormal operating conditions in a timely and safe manner and communicate issues to the Shift Supervisor or Control Room Operator. § Identify, troubleshoot, and report equipment abnormalities, discrepancies, leaks, vibrations, and process deviations for corrective action and work order implementation. § Assist with startup, shutdown, normal, and emergency operations of plant systems and equipment. § Support operation of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and monitor plant conditions through field observations and operational data. § Take readings and measurements and compare results against operational standards and established procedures. § Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection reports, and shift documentation. § Perform routine water chemistry testing and assist with chemical feed adjustments and regeneration processes as required. § Support preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities on plant equipment and systems. § Coordinate and communicate with maintenance personnel, contractors, and other departments to safely complete work activities. § Participate in job briefings, safety meetings, and training programs. § Execute and support plant safety programs and procedures including Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, and Job Safety Analysis (JSA). § Maintain housekeeping standards and identify and correct workplace hazards. § Assist in the development and revision of plant operating procedures and standard operating procedures (SOPs). § Monitor environmental systems and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements. § Oversee work activities of contractors or other crafts on assigned shifts as needed. § Attend scheduled meetings, training sessions, and participate in ongoing professional development activities. § Perform other duties as assigned. § Works with a moderate level of guidance. Qualifications Required Education & Experience § High school diploma or equivalent. § Minimum of 1 year of industrial, manufacturing, power plant, or process operations experience. § Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required. § Ability to work independently with moderate supervision and function effectively in a team environment. § Strong communication and organizational skills. § Basic computer proficiency and ability to maintain operational records and logs. Preferred Qualifications § Experience in a power generation facility, industrial utility plant, or process plant environment. § Experience with coal-fired, biomass, or other solid fuel generation systems. § Knowledge of Distributed Control Systems (DCS). § Knowledge of plant equipment isolation, switching, and Lock Out/Tag Out procedures. § Experience responding to plant alarms, abnormal operating conditions, and emergencies. § Familiarity with water chemistry systems and environmental compliance equipment. § Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, and technical manuals. Competencies § Knowledge of power plant or industrial process equipment and operations. Ability to safely operate and monitor plant equipment and systems. Ability to recognize abnormal equipment conditions and take corrective action within established procedures. Knowledge of plant safety rules, procedures, and emergency response practices. Ability to coordinate work activities with operations, maintenance, and contractors. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to maintain professional competence and pursue continuous development. Ability to work in outdoor environments and industrial conditions, including elevated areas, confined spaces, heat, noise, and varying weather conditions. Ability to walk, climb stairs and ladders, lift equipment and tools, and work in industrial environments. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE). Ability to respond to emergency situations as required.
