Under direction of the Office Manager, the Ophthalmic Technician generates important preliminary information to be used by the Ophthalmologist and performs medical tests. Essential duties include providing excellent customer/patient services. The position is considered a crucial link between the patient and the care delivered by clinical and service staff of the office. The incumbent must work collaboratively with all Administrative services staff in support of direct patient services, exhibiting flexibility and a "can do" attitude. Patient services are the key priority in this position requiring the Ophthalmic Technician to serve as a point of contact with patients and fostering an environment which promotes patient comfort and trust. The position must exemplify the core values and mission of the organization, always exercising utmost discretion, diplomacy and tact in patient/staff interactions.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES 1.
Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Performs testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and history. 2. Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity. 3. Performs lensometry, refractometry, and tonometry prior to physician exam. 4. Performs diagnostic tests as needed. 5. Administers topical ophthalmic medications under the direction of the physician. 6. Assists with in-office procedures ensuring proper informed consent is obtained, sets up and cleans up from procedures. 7. Assists in training of other ophthalmic technicians. 8. Assists with patient education. 9. Performs sterilization protocol for medical instruments used. 10. Performs weekly inventory for all medical supplies. 11. Must update contact lens prescriptions onto third party online vendor, ODG Optical daily. 12. Must obtain prior authorizations for medications if needed, daily. 13. Must assist medical providers with medication refills. 14. Maintains cleanliness, stocking, and orderliness of exam rooms and waiting room during the work day. 15. Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Understands and accepts responsibility to report potential or suspected errors to supervisor, office manager, or physician. 16. Maintains positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism. 17. Adheres to all Office policies on safety and security; maintains restricted computer system passwords in strict confidentiality. 18. Must exercise utmost diplomacy and tact to provide excellent customer service for patients; practices confidentiality and privacy protocols in accordance to Office policies and HIPAA requirements. 19. Exercises problem-solving and conflict resolution skills when handling patient complaints; refers patient complaints to appropriate designated personnel as needed. 20. Performs other duties as may be required.QUALIFICATIONS 1.
Understands the importance of maintaining confidentiality; able to maintain confidentiality under HIPAA standards. 2. Must have the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and tact; excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills; Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse people groups. 3. Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions or work performed. Willing to accept constructive criticism. 4. Must be highly flexible; able to accommodate changing needs of the practice. 5. Well developed verbal and written communication skills in English; Additional language abilities desirable. 6. Knowledge of basic math and modern office procedures. 7. Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision. Proven flexibility and willingness to handle a variety of tasks. 8. Willingness to work evenings and/or weekends. 9. Paying close attention to details. 10. Basic to intermediate computer/office knowledge and skills 11. Training and/or experience with computer data entry and ability to operate a 10 key calculator by touch. 12. Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly with attention to all details of a project or task. 13. Ability to make decisions or take actions to solve a problem or reach a goal. Desire to excel, attempting non-routine tasks. 14. Can be relied upon to demonstrate reliability in attendance and punctuality. 15. The ability to work with others and independently for a common goal. Puts aside own individual needs to work toward the larger group objective and reinforces the contribution of others.CERTIFICATES & LICENSES
None required. Certification through JCAHPO encouraged.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 1.
Graduation from high school or equivalent plus six months of ophthalmic technician/medical assistant experience in a health care setting. 2. Prior clinical experience in medical practice, clinic, or community-based setting highly preferred. Needs to work toward the larger group objective and reinforces the contribution of others.Job Type:
