Job Description

Camp Widjiwagan's Outdoor Learning Program is hiring Instructors for the 2026-2027 school year. Instructors teach outdoor and environmental classes to primarily 4th-8th grade students, lead small groups, support overnight camp experiences, assist with safety, and help with weekend retreats at the Ely, MN site. Candidates should enjoy working with youth, be flexible in outdoor settings and group dynamics, and have or be willing to obtain First Aid/CPR (WFA or WFR preferred). Pay starts at $95 per day and includes room and board, Sick/Safe Time, and a free YMCA membership. The fall season runs September 8-November 6, 2026, and winter/spring runs January 4-May 7, 2027, with preference for instructors available for both. 1.
Job Summary:
The Outdoor Education/Team Building Instructor is responsible for facilitating environmental and outdoor recreation activities and teambuilding programs. The incumbent plans and prepares for programs and serves as a host and liaison to participant groups. The incumbent provides high quality experiences for participants that focus on the YMCA core values: equity, caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. 2.
Essential Functions:
Prepares for, teaches, and facilitates environmental and outdoor recreation programs following established curriculum and safety guidelines Prepares for and facilitates teambuilding programs using approved curriculum and safety standards Serves as a host and liaison for program participant groups Inspects teambuilding structures and equipment and reports repair needs Maintains, inventories, and repairs program materials and equipment Identifies and responds appropriately to participant behavioral concerns Assists with curriculum updates by exploring new teaching techniques and activities Participates in staff trainings and meetings Ensures program areas remain clean and organized Assists with program setup and cleanup Supports other camp program areas as needed 3.
Relationships:
This position reports to the Camp Program Director who reports to the Camp Executive Director. The incumbent interacts regularly with camp staff, program participants, school teachers and chaperones from a diverse background. 4.
Qualifications:
Required Must be at least 18 years of age Minimum of one (1) year of experience in camp, youth, or recreation programs working with children and/or adults, or in a related field Experience facilitating group-based programs, preferably in an outdoor setting Strong organizational skills Effective verbal and written communication skills Current First Aid and CPR certification, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire Ability to work effectively as part of a team Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups Preferred Related educational background Knowledge of environmental and natural history concepts Experience facilitating high ropes and low ropes courses Basic computer skills Ability to pass a driver's road test for YMCA vehicles and trailers Willingness to complete YMCA-provided Motor Vehicle and/or Department of Transportation insurance training upon hire 5.
Work Conditions:
Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp programs and activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, skiing, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games, and activities. Must have the ability to be outside in all weather conditions and on your feet for prolonged periods of time (up to 10 hours in a day). 6.
