The position collaborates with a multi-disciplinary team and directly assists other medical providers in providing care for patients. The outreach athletic trainer provides direct patient contact primarily for the evaluation and treatment of medical and orthopedic pathology. General roles include the prevention, diagnosis, and interventions to treat emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Evaluation and management of musculoskeletal injuries, concussion, and other injury/illness common to the physically active population.
  • Provide practice/competition surveillance, injury recognition and evaluation, initial first aid treatment, injury management and patient education, preventive taping, and padding.
  • Provide referral for medical care as deemed necessary, establish treatment, or return to participation plans, communicate care with health care team, patient/participant, family, coaches, and staff.
  • Establish administrative procedures to provide emergency plans, risk management, equipment and supply inventory, and documentation of services.
  • Provide a specialized level of clinical/technical service for care coordination and/or health professions education. Maintain and update equipment and supplies used in providing specialty care or services.
  • Provide health education to patients, residents and students. Communicate detailed medical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Follow/apply policies/documentation requirements. Participate in Quality Assurance. Report variances and work to address them.
  • Knowledge of health care policies for all clinical practices and applicable laws and regulations governing proper clinical practice; ability to demonstrate ethical behavior in a variety of situations.
  • Knowledge of the relevance of health information and appropriate documentation methods; ability to record medical histories, symptoms, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, tests, and medical results in written or electronic format.

Required Qualifications
  • Professional degree in Athletic Training from an accredited program
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant, related experience
  • Board Certified Athletic Trainer
  • Iowa Athletic Trainer license upon commencement
  • Current, active CPR/BLS certification
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Desired Qualifications
  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field if professional degree was BS or BA
  • Clinical experience working in a junior high school and/or high school setting
  • 1 to 3 years of experience as a certified
