Parks Groundskeeper

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

The Parks Groundskeeper performs indoor and outdoor building and grounds maintenance work related to the operation and maintenance of municipal parks, community centers, a pool facility, ballfields and other municipal facilities as needed. The incumbent assists Parks staff as needed to meet goals of the department and perform other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the supervision of the Parks Foreman or designee, the incumbent assists in the operation and maintenance of municipal facilities and grounds performing semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor in addition to other general responsibilities of the department.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

(ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY): Operates power equipment such as tractor lawn mowers, grass cutters, etc. in the maintenance, mowing, raking and cutting of grass in municipal parks. Operates various equipment including but not limited to, various power and no-power tools in the trimming and/or removal of brush and trees in park areas. Assists in grounds maintenance, including seasonal care of trees, shrubs, flowers, ground preparation for lawn rejuvenation. Assists in preparation of athletic fields for play including cutting grass, removing litter/debris, lining fields. Performs maintenance of paths, driveways and parking lots including sweeping of areas, snow removal and minor black top repair. Cleans swimming pool and refills with water.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

Knowledge of equipment operations including but not limited to operating mowers, backhoe/frontend loader, small engine equipment, shop tools, heavy-duty trucks with trailer, beautification, irrigation and athletic field maintenance. Ability to conduct inspections, maintain records and repair logs. Ability to deal effectively with the public and associates as well as communicate efficiently in written and oral form. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Employee is required to operate automotive equipment and must be in possession, at time of appointment, of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State.
