Job Description

The Pastry Cook is responsible for preparing high-quality breakfast pastries, desserts, and other baked items while maintaining consistency, presentation, and food safety standards. The ideal candidate is passionate about pastry preparation, works well in a fast-paced kitchen environment, and takes pride in creating scratch-made products that enhance the dining experience. This role also supports overall kitchen operations through teamwork, cleanliness, organization, and excellent customer service.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare and coordinate daily breakfast pastries and desserts following established production procedures and systems. Plan pastry production in coordination with meal service to ensure quality, temperature, and appearance of food are preserved. Prepare a variety of pastries, desserts, doughs, fillings, and baked goods according to recipes and production schedules. Maintain food safety standards and proper handling techniques in compliance with company policy and local regulations. Ensure supplies and ingredients are available or secure approved substitutions in time for preparation. Keep work area clean and organized; clean and maintain equipment used in food preparation. Complete food temperature checks before service as required. Assist with meal service, including setting steam tables, serving food, or supporting other workstations as needed. Help with unloading, inspecting, and storing ingredients and supplies. Perform daily cleaning tasks such as dishwashing, sweeping, mopping, and garbage removal. Support special event meals (e.g., recruitment, homecoming, celebrations) as directed. Represent Upper Crust Food Service positively in daily interactions with clients, student members, and staff. Ability to work well as part of a team. Strong attention to detail and consistency in food preparation. Knowledge of pastry preparation techniques, dessert presentation, and baking fundamentals. Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to follow all sanitation and safety procedures. Positive attitude and adaptability to changing tasks.Preferred Education and Experience:
High school diploma required. 2-5 years of professional pastry or baking experience required. Experience in a bakery, restaurant, or similar food service environment preferred. Valid food safety and sanitation certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment).Special Demands:
Must be able to stand for long periods of time and work in a busy kitchen environment with heat, steam, and noise. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds at times.
