Job Description

Triton Construction is seeking an experienced Payroll Specialist to oversee payroll operations for a multi-state, union heavy civil construction company. This position is responsible for managing accurate and timely payroll processing while ensuring compliance with union agreements, prevailing wage requirements, certified payroll reporting, fringe benefit obligations, and multi-state labor and payroll regulations. This is a key position within our accounting and administrative team. The ideal candidate will have strong payroll experience in the construction industry, with specific experience handling union payroll, multiple collective bargaining agreements, job classifications, wage rates, fringe benefits, deductions, union reporting, and payroll compliance requirements. Responsibilities The Payroll Specialist will be responsible for payroll functions including:
  • Process and manage weekly payroll for union employees.
  • Ensure payroll is completed accurately, timely, and in accordance with company policies, union agreements, and applicable labor laws.
  • Maintain and apply multiple union wage rates, classifications, fringes, deductions, and benefit requirements.
  • Review collective bargaining agreements and ensure payroll is processed in accordance with each agreement.
  • Manage payroll across multiple states, including varying state tax, wage, hour, labor, and reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and submit union reports, benefit fund reports, remittance reports, and related payroll documentation.
  • Manage certified payroll reporting for public works and DOT projects.
  • Ensure compliance with Davis-Bacon, prevailing wage, state-specific wage determinations, and project-specific payroll requirements.
  • Track and verify employee classifications, work locations, project codes, cost codes, union locals, and applicable wage rates.
  • Review timecards, job allocations, equipment/labor coding, and other payroll-related entries.
  • Coordinate with project managers, field supervisors, accounting and operations to resolve payroll issues.
  • Manage payroll deductions, garnishments, taxes, union dues, benefits, reimbursements, and fringe allocations.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records for internal use, audits, union inquiries, compliance reviews, and project documentation.
  • Respond to union audits.
  • Maintain confidentiality of employees, payroll, and company information.
  • Perform other payroll, accounting, and compliance-related duties as assigned. Union Payroll Responsibilities Because Triton performs union construction work across multiple states, this role requires detailed attention to union payroll requirements, including:
  • Multiple union locals and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Different wage rates by state, county, project, classification, and union jurisdiction.
  • Fringe benefit tracking and remittance.
  • Union dues and deductions.
  • Apprentice and journeyman classifications.
  • Overtime and premium pay rules.
  • Project-specific wage determinations.
  • Certified payroll and prevailing wage compliance.
  • Union benefit fund reporting.
  • Audit preparation and response.
  • Accurate recordkeeping to support compliance and defend payroll decisions. Qualifications.
  • Construction payroll experience is strongly preferred.
  • Union payroll experience required.
  • Experience with multi-state payroll strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of certified payroll, prevailing wage, Davis-Bacon, and public works payroll requirements preferred.
  • Experience reviewing and applying collective bargaining agreements.
  • Strong understanding of payroll taxes, deductions, benefits, garnishments, overtime, and wage/hour rules.
  • Ability to manage multiple pay rates, classifications, states, unions, and reporting requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to meet strict weekly deadlines.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work with field personnel, project managers, accounting staff, union representatives, auditors, and management.
  • Experience with construction accounting or payroll software required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and general payroll/accounting systems.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive employee information. Job Type
