Job Description

Mr. D's Music Club is a multi-award-winning performing arts after-school and summer camp program for kids, and we are looking for an acting & theater teaching artist to join us! Mr. D's Music Club encourages kids to explore their creativity and discover what artistically inspires them. Our programs focus on fun rather than perfection. We want kids to feel comfortable taking artistic risks, trying new things, and building confidence through creative expression. While campers learn artistic techniques through hands-on activities, rehearsals, creative projects, and performance preparation, our approach is rooted in creativity, encouragement, and engagement rather than overly formal lessons. Learning and having fun go hand in hand as the camp works toward the Friday performance. One of our sayings is, "If it feels like school, we are doing something wrong." The ideal candidate will be excited to embrace a playful, supportive, and highly interactive approach to arts education. We value encouragement, flexibility, creativity, and active participation while still working toward meaningful goals and a successful Friday performance. Our camps are high-energy, engaging, and camp-oriented, and we look for teaching artists who can help create an environment where kids feel excited to participate, take creative risks, and have fun. Summer Camps
  • As the acting teaching artist, you will introduce acting concepts to kids through games, improv, scene-work, expression, projection, movement, and performance preparation as campers work toward a short play for the Friday performance.
Each week includes two groups of campers that prepare a short play for the performance. The plays are original and provided for each camp week, allowing you to focus on acting, directing, stage presence, theater etiquette, and helping campers build confidence in performance. Many of our campers have little to no prior acting experience, but they are curious and enthusiastic to learn. So the goal is to create an engaging and supportive environment where kids feel comfortable trying new things, participating, and building confidence on stage. Our performances are designed to give kids the experience of performing in front of an audience while exploring creativity, expression, and storytelling in a fun, camp-oriented setting. We prioritize confidence-building, participation, and artistic exploration over perfection or highly formal theater instruction. The acting portion of camp should feel energetic, playful, and accessible while still helping campers develop meaningful performance skills and stage confidence. The Ideal Teaching Artist Candidate Genuine interest in working with kids. 1-2+ years of previous teaching, camp, or youth theater experience preferred. Has a great sense of humor and openness to having fun. Comfortable working in a playful, high-energy, camp-oriented environment. Does not take themselves too seriously and can laugh at themselves. Able to encourage creativity, confidence, participation, and stage presence in a supportive environment. Understands how to introduce acting concepts in engaging, age-appropriate ways through games, acting activities, movement, rehearsal, and performance preparation. Able to adapt quickly when an activity, rehearsal, or approach is not working. Comfortable guiding campers toward a successful performance experience within a limited rehearsal schedule. Recognizes that success is measured by campers having fun, building confidence, participating, and exploring the performing arts. Understands that this is a seasonal, part-time role designed to complement artistic pursuits or other work. Additional opportunities may become available as the program grows. Some previous teaching, group management, or youth leadership experience preferred. Minimum Requirements Experience in acting and theater as a performer, theater student, teaching artist, director, or active creative professional. Ability to incorporate approachable acting techniques, stage direction, movement, expression, and performance concepts into activities for kids. Ability to pace rehearsals and group work effectively within a camp environment and limited rehearsal timeline. Open to feedback and guidance from staff to help maintain the culture, quality, and goals of the camp. Must be 18 years of age or older.
