Artistic Director/Choreographer Placer Theatre Ballet Roseville, CA Job Details Contract From $60 an hour 1 day ago Qualifications Teamwork Organizational skills Leading team collaboration initiatives Live production performance Project leadership Delegation Working with youth Art direction Full Job Description Artistic Director - Seasonal Position (Nutcracker Production) Position Summary Placer Theatre Ballet (PTB) is seeking an Artistic Director to lead our upcoming Nutcracker production. This is a seasonal contract role that begins with the Nutcracker season, with the potential to evolve into a broader, ongoing position for future productions depending on organizational capacity and mutual interest. The Artistic Director is responsible for the artistic and production elements of PTB and operates within the mission, policies, strategic direction, and approved budgets established by the Board of Directors. This role reports directly to the Board of Directors (or to an officer designated by the Board) and collaborates closely with the Board throughout the production cycle. PTB is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation dedicated to enriching the lives of youth and the community through high-quality ballet performance and education. Our productions feature youth dancers of varying skill levels through an open audition process. Engagement Structure This position is structured as a seasonal contract for the Nutcracker production. The scope of work is concentrated in the months leading up to and including the performance run, with intensity increasing significantly in the final weeks of production. Upon successful completion of the Nutcracker season, PTB and the Artistic Director may mutually explore expanding the role to cover additional productions. Key Responsibilities Artistic Leadership and Production Excellence Establish and execute the artistic vision for the Nutcracker production, aligned with PTB's mission and Board-approved direction. Choreograph and stage the production, or oversee choreography selection, ensuring compliance with copyright laws. Adapt artistic direction to accommodate varying skill levels and an open audition environment. Select music and collaborate with the production team on all artistic components. Oversee staging, costuming, set design, and all visual and technical production elements. Direct and monitor productions throughout the rehearsal process to ensure artistic excellence. Attend all rehearsals during the final three weeks of production, including technical and dress rehearsals. Attend all performances and provide constructive feedback to performers between shows. Casting, Rehearsals, and Dancer Development Plan, schedule, and oversee auditions, including managing an open audition process. Serve as the final decision-maker on casting , in consultation with the Board as appropriate.. Develop and maintain rehearsal schedules that support both production readiness and dancer well-being. Provide mentorship and guidance to dancers across a range of ages and experience levels. Support dancer growth in technique, artistry, and performance quality within a limited rehearsal structure. Board Collaboration and Accountability Report to the Board of Directors and keep the Board regularly informed on production progress, scheduling, and any operational needs. Operate within budgets and policies approved by the Board; seek Board approval for contractor engagements and significant expenditures. Attend Board meetings in a non-voting, advisory capacity when requested. Participate in a formal performance evaluation conducted by the Executive Committee, as outlined in PTB's bylaws. Staff and Volunteer Coordination Coordinate with staff, volunteers, and family contributors essential to production success. Recommend contractors and artistic personnel as needed, subject to Board approval of budgets and contracts. Delegate responsibilities effectively and maintain clear communication across all teams. Community and Family Relations Foster a positive, inclusive, and professional environment for dancers and their families. Communicate clearly and professionally regarding casting decisions and performance expectations. Navigate sensitive situations, including casting outcomes, with professionalism and empathy. Build and maintain collaborative relationships with local dance schools. Represent PTB as an ambassador within the local arts community. Production and Operational Support Collaborate with the production team to coordinate theater venues, rehearsal spaces, and technical elements, within Board-approved parameters. Contribute to the development of marketing and promotional materials for the production Support financial accountability by tracking expenses within the approved production budget. Qualifications and Experience Demonstrated experience choreographing and staging ballet productions of varying size and scope. Proven ability to manage complex productions, including coordination of artistic and technical elements. Experience working with youth dancers across a range of ages and skill levels. Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills. Experience collaborating with boards, volunteers, and community stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively within a Board-governed nonprofit structure. Familiarity with nonprofit organizations and fundraising practices is preferred. Must be willing to submit a background check prior to the start date. Compensation This is a paid contract position, with the majority of work occurring between August and December. Compensation will be outlined in a written agreement approved by the Board of Directors.
