SEEKING:
Janice:
she/ her, Black, late teens and early 40s, the daughter of Edwin and Helen. As an adult, Janice reflects back on the 1960s when her parents fought to integrate the local swimming pools in their Kansas town. She carries the weight of her family's legacy while also trying to carve out her own identity with her own family. She is proud of her parents' activism but also concerned it may consume them all.
Helen:
she/her, Black, mid-30s and mid 60s, Janice's mother and Edwin's wife. She once aspired to be a swim coach but the segregation of the times and closing of local swimming pools made that a dream deferred. An activist determined to push for her family's rights and freedoms. She allows her husband to be the face of the fight while she makes waves behind the scenes. She is firmly middle class and rooted to her small Kansasmunity. She has to choose what is right for her family.
Gayle:
she/ her Black, early 30s, this track also doubles as Young, Ambitious, Chipper Black Woman, 30s. Gayle is the aunt we all wish we had. She is fun and loving but also knows when to be serious. A world traveler with many stories to tell, she is close with Janice and provides a respite for Janice. Young, Ambitious Chipper Black Woman is all those things: young, ambitious, chipper, Black. She can do anything she sets her mind to.
Edwin:
He/him Black, 30s to 40s. Father of Janice and husband to Helen. A dedicated activist and rabblerouser. Edwin is firmly working class and proud of it.
