Job Description

Middle School / High School Band Director Full-time, 10-month position Reports to: Fine Arts Director Position Summary The Middle School / High School Band Director effectively teaches instrumental music to middle and high school students using approved curriculum and repertoire to enhance student learning and musical development. This position integrates a Biblical worldview into all aspects of music instruction, nurturing students' God-given talents while developing technical proficiency, ensemble performance skills, and an appreciation for music as a reflection of the Creator. The Band Director works collaboratively with the Fine Arts Department and school faculty to create an engaging, Christ-centered learning environment that inspires students and supports the mission of the school. Spiritual Leadership and Culture Model a growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ and demonstrate Christian character in all professional and personal interactions. Maintain a close personal walk with the Lord evidenced by lifestyle and professional conduct. Participate actively in spiritual activities including prayer, devotions, Bible study, and chapel. Plan and implement rehearsals and lessons that are intentionally and meaningfully integrated with a Biblical worldview. Observe the Matthew 18 principle in all conflict resolution. Key Responsibilities Instruction and Curriculum Develop and implement a comprehensive instrumental music curriculum for grades 6-12, including concert band and pep band. Effectively teach woodwind, brass, and percussion pedagogy to middle and high school students. Prepare detailed lesson and rehearsal plans that align with curriculum goals and integrate Biblical principles. Regularly assess student progress and provide differentiated instruction to meet individual musical needs. Maintain a clean, organized, and professional band room and instrument storage environment. Demonstrate enthusiasm and a genuine love for teaching, learning, and the musical arts. Guide students in preparing for auditions, solo/ensemble competitions, and college music program admissions. Coordinate, rehearse, and direct high-quality performances for concerts, chapel services, and school events to reflect a commitment to excellence. Coordinate and lead pep band performances at home football games and other events as needed Provide occasional instructional support or assistance for elementary music classes as assigned by administration. Student and Classroom Management Maintain proper rehearsal discipline in a manner consistent with school policies and a Christ-centered environment. Model cooperative, respectful, responsible, and spiritually-minded behavior at all times. Schedule and conduct conferences with parents or students as needed to address academic or musical progress. Supervise extracurricular band activities, including trips, festivals, and community performances. Professional Responsibilities Implement systems, policies, and procedures as outlined by school administration. Complete all reporting duties, including grading and attendance, in a timely and accurate manner. Maintain punctual attendance at faculty meetings, devotions, and all assigned responsibilities. Complete all requirements for ACSI certification and maintain current credentialing. Maintain a program of individual professional growth and ongoing development in both pedagogy and conducting. Fulfill all additional duties as assigned by school administration.
Qualifications Required:
A growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ and the ability to articulate and model a Biblical worldview. Agreement with the school's statement of faith. Bachelor's degree in Music Education or related field required. Demonstrated proficiency in conducting and instrumental pedagogy. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and ability to manage complex ensemble logistics. ACSI certification or willingness to obtain.
Preferred:
Master's degree in Music Education or Conducting. Minimum of five (5) years of classroom teaching experience, preferably in a Christian school setting. Experience directing both middle and high school ensembles. Essential Characteristics Deep commitment to Christian education and the spiritual development of students. Collaborative team player who supports the broader Fine Arts program and school community. Physical Requirements Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including standing for extended periods during rehearsals and performances, moving equipment, and handling musical instruments. Compensation and Terms This is a full-time, salaried, 10-month position per contract. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
