  • Part-time Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, located in midtown Atlanta seeks a part-time Youth Choir Director with an anticipated start date of August 2026. The director will lead the J.O.Y. (Just Our Youth) within the ages of 6th
  • 12th grade, continuing their training in our graded choir program, instilling in them an appreciation for and love of sacred music, engaging them in enjoyable music making, and enabling them to enrich worship by proclaiming the gospel through song.
We are seeking a director with experience in working with youth, who can prepare them to lead worship, and assist in their spiritual formation and relationship building. Information regarding Lutheran Church of the Redeemer may be found on the church's website: https://www.redeemer.org/
Position Requirements and Compensation Salary:
$5,800
  • 6,200 The part-time position is roughly 3 hours/week, 36 weeks per year (mid-August
  • early May) with an opportunity to work as faculty during Summer Music and Arts Camp week for additional pay.
The director is responsible for teaching and preparing anthems for worship, building choristers' music reading and vocal skills, and providing spiritual leadership for the J.O.Y. Choir (grades 6-12). The choir rehearses most Sundays 9:00-9:45 am and sings for the 11:00 worship services approximately six times per year. The position requires a person who has proven musical skills in working with youth choirs, and effective communication and interpersonal skills. The J.O.Y. Choir Director reports directly to Sarah Hawbecker, Organist and Director of Music for Children and Youth. Skills and Experience Candidates for this position should demonstrate the following:
  • knowledge of sacred choral repertoire and resources for youth choirs
  • experience in choosing a variety of music that is both engaging and educational, while being appropriate for the age group
  • the ability to use proper vocal pedagogy appropriate to the ages of the choristers
  • the ability to work constructively with children and youth of differing musical abilities and skills, including boys with changing voices
  • Keyboard proficiency and ability to teach parts from the piano (an accompanist is provided for worship services, but not for most rehearsals.)
  • A genuine care for children and youth and willingness to be a part of their musical and faith formation
  • willingness to recruit new members in each choir
  • effective communications skills
  • familiarity with the lectionary and Lutheran liturgical practices is helpful
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in music and at least 2 years of experience in leading children's or youth choirs Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepare for and lead the J.O.Y. Choir's regularly scheduled weekly rehearsals (9-00-9:45 am on Sundays during the academic year, with designated school holidays off). Rehearsals will begin and end on time and will include time for learning hymns and liturgy as well as anthems.
  • Prepare for and lead the J.O.Y. Choir in all music for worship services (primarily 11:00 am Sunday services) 5-6 times per academic year, plus occasional seasonal worship services. On these occasions the J.O.Y. Choir Director will be present for the entire worship service.
  • In consultation with the Director of Music for Children and Youth, develop the J.O.Y. Choir's schedule prior to the school year and choose music appropriate to the liturgical day
  • With approval of the Director of Music for Children and Youth, purchase music for the J.O.Y. Choir within the annual budgeted allowance and oversee the filing of music
  • Schedule and work with assigned accompanist (Organist, Organ Scholar, or volunteer musician) as needed
  • Communicate with choristers and their parents regularly
  • If ill, immediately notify Director of Music for Children and Youth to make alternate rehearsal or performance plans
  • Work with all staff members and volunteers in a respectful manner
