The music program includes a Chancel Choir, a Handbell Choir, and a Praise Band, all consisting of dedicated volunteers. Worship music at Carter is a blended style of traditional and contemporary and is a vital ministry of our church. Full Job Description The Director of Music is responsible for the total music program of the church. This includes overseeing all choral and instrumental groups, conducting the Chancel Choir, supervision of the organist, and scheduling of all music programming (choirs and soloists), for the entire year. The role(s) of Director of Handbell Choir and Director of PS96 (Praise Band) have been created as separate stipend positions. These positions are paid in addition to the Director of Music and Organist positions to compensate for the additional hours required to manage these programs. If the decision is made for these groups to stop meeting and performing, the stipend for their direction will no longer be paid. The programming of both the Handbell Choir and PS96 will be under the supervision of the Director of Music. Primary Job Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the scheduling of all choirs and soloists with the Senior Pastor and other relevant stakeholders. A music schedule should be published twice a year and distributed to the choirs and church staff.
  • Supervise Organist and support their professional development of skills and involvement in the music program.
  • Plan all music for and direct the Chancel Choir at rehearsals (currently Thurs evenings) and worship services (e.g. Sunday mornings, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week) during the choir year September through June.
  • Direct all additional performances of the Chancel Choir, within the church and outside the church, upon agreement with the Director of Music, the Senior Pastor, and the Chancel Choir. Additional performances by other choirs shall be agreed upon by the Director and the Senior Pastor.
  • Provide regular communications to Chancel Choir and other musicians.
  • Plan with the Director of Children and Youth Ministry for the implementation of appropriate music materials in the church school program, and whenever possible, coordinate music and education efforts.
  • Submit regular articles for the church newsletter, The Messenger, to provide information to the congregation about choir anthems and musical events that are part of the church music program.
  • Submit bulletin information regarding the service music to the Office Manager on a weekly basis during the choir year.
  • As a member of the church staff and the Church Council, attend all regularly scheduled meetings of such organizations to ensure coordination of the music program within the total program of the church.
  • Facilitate bi-annual tuning of four church pianos and one organ in coordination with the Office Manager.
  • Order choral music as needed.
  • Recruit new participants in music programs.
  • Manage the budget for the music programs. This includes working with the Endowment team to gain approval of the use of several music related endowments.
  • Coordinate summer organist/piano coverage when neither Organist nor Director of Music is available. Communicate expenses with the Staff Parish Relations Committee chair ($200 per Sunday, in 2026).
  • Assign coverage for expected and unexpected absences.
  • Maintain music library and oversee upkeep of choir room.
  • Facilitate applications from community piano teachers for recitals in the church building according to the Trustees Building Use Policy.
  • Other duties as assigned by the senior pastor and/or Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Qualifications/Requirements
  • Must have experience with music programming and direction of multiple choral and instrumental group
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Music Degree
  • Piano experience required
  • Passion for and knowledge of choral singing
  • Extensive knowledge of sacred music repertoire and experience with liturgical worship is a plus
  • Organized, collaborative, creative, visionary, spiritually grounded, flexible, resourceful, and self-sufficient The candidate must also read and agree to the Safe Sanctuary policy as adopted by Carter Memorial United Methodist Church.
This includes agreeing to a CORI background check and acting in accordance with the provisions set forth by the Safe Sanctuary policy.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary: $24,000-26,000/year based on education/experience, plus additional stipend for Director of Handbells position. Benefits are in alignment with current Carter Personnel Handbook policies and include:
  • Two weeks paid vacation to be arranged with the Senior Pastor (excludes Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy week, and Easter)
