The Sudbury Savoyards are actively recruiting a

MUSIC DIRECTOR

for our February 2027 production of The Pirates of Penzance, or The Slave of Duty. In appreciation of your time and talent, The Sudbury Savoyards are offering a$1500 stipend for this position. The Sudbury Savoyards have presented "Gilbert and Sullivan on a Grand Scale since 1961" and are excited to be continuing this rich tradition in 2027. This is w we need YOU! Do you want to work with a wide range of fabulous singers and a full orchestra? Are you excited to work on a Grand Scale production? Each year the Savoyards attract wonderful voices to audition for our volunteer lead roles. We also are unique in the area in that we do not require auditions for our volunteer chorus which is usually 20-30 people strong. We are open to all who want to join! Forplete Music Director information and to check out our at: sudburysavoyards/the-pirates-of-penzance-2027/ The Pirates of Penzance; or The Slave of Duty, was the fifth Gilbert and Sullivan collaboration and was the only opera by Gilbert and Sullivan to have its official premiere in the United States. The story concerns Frederic, who havingpleted his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets the daughters of Major-General Stanley, including Mabel, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic learns that he was born on the 29th of February; technically, he has a birthday only once each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his "twenty-first birthday", meaning that he must serve for another 63 years.

Bound by his own sense of duty to honor his bond with the pirates, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully. The pirates' maid-of-all-work, Ruth, eventually reveals a fact that s the day.

Qualifications:

MUSIC DIRECTOR JOB EXPECTATIONS

Collaborate and co-plan with the Stage Director and Stage Manager as a team. Prepare for auditions and cast sign ups. Participate in creating a rehearsal schedule, taking conflicts into account. Participate in finding and scheduling rehearsal apanists and substitutes. Participate in finding/creating rehearsal tracks for ensemble parts. Recruit (with the support of the Orchestra Manager) a 25+ all-volunteer orchestra. Prepare for and conduct cast music rehearsals. Conduct warm-ups and advise on vocal technique. Teach ensemble parts, helping people who may not read music to learn their music. Be aware of cast conflicts as you plan rehearsals. Review music before each blocking rehearsal. Advise and fix musical issues that arise during rehearsals. Collaborate with and musically support the Stage Director. Prepare for and conduct music at most staging, choreography, and blocking rehearsals. Prepare and conduct 4-6 Orchestra rehearsals (Sundays); collaborate with Orchestra Manager as to attendance and chair splitting. Be present and available to conduct all Tech Week rehearsals and all performances. Attend production meetings as requested/required.
