The Music and Arts Ministry of First United Methodist Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan, is committed to a comprehensive music ministry with adults, teens, and children.
Principle Function:
The director of the Wesley Singers will have the primary responsibility to develop a high-quality, inviting music ministry for students, within the congregation, in 3rd through 8th grades. The director will teach, prepare and direct the students during regular scheduled Sunday morning rehearsals and monthly performances in First UMC worship services.
Hours & Accountability:
This is a part-time salary position (about three to five hours per week), during the nine-month school year. While this musician is free to have other musical engagements and commitments, it is expected that priority will be given to the First UMC children's music ministry requirements and scheduled Sunday services. The director will report to the Director of Music and Arts as well as coordinating with the Director of Children's Ministry and the Youth Director.
Essential Functions:
Direct the Wesley Singers Choir. Develop a dynamic, inviting music ministry opportunity for children culminating in performances in worship services. Hold regularly scheduled weekly choir rehearsals for one hour (typically each Sunday) during the nine-month school term while also recruiting new members. The Director should be prompt and well-prepared for rehearsals at all times. Develop appropriate repertoire for children and middle school students by choosing quality and engaging musical selections for worship services. Select and purchase music for the choir, as needed. Effectively communicate the needs and challenges to the Director of Music and Arts and other leaders involved in the children's and youth ministries. Coordinate with the Director of Music and Arts the schedule for the Wesley Singers involvement in worship or special services. Provide the song title and text of the song to be performed, as well as names of accompanying musicians, to the Director of Communications by Tuesday noon prior to the Sunday performance for inclusion in the order of worship. Oversee and assure maintenance, care and tracking of all music, stoles, instruments and other music ministry property. Attend and participate in Music Ministry staff meetings as necessary. Attend general meetings involving children's and youth ministries. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills Preferred:
Personal Attributes Enthusiasm for working with children and an understanding of their musical skills. Organizational, classroom and time management skills to ensure consistent and enjoyable children's involvement in church life and worship services. Effective planning and organizations skills with the ability to lead, delegate and work with volunteers. Ability to read and efficiently communicate verbally in writing to a diverse community and staff in a courteous, professional and confidential manner. Ability to make decisions, work independently and keep all discussions and documents confidential. Technical Competencies Proficiency in teaching choral music and directing a choir. Advanced skills in researching and selecting appropriate music for the Wesley Singers age range. Superior aural skills Understanding of children's vocal and cognitive development Proficiency in playing voice parts at the piano; although an accompanist is usually provided. A degree in music, music education, or choral conducting, preferred.
Compensation:
A salary of$150/week, for 3-5 hours/week, during the nine-month school year. Physical presence is expected on Sunday mornings.
