  • Part-time About Farmingdale United Methodist Church From our beginning, Farmingdale United Methodist Church has been the center of Christian life in the Farmingdale community through its spiritual leadership, mission, and social action.
Farmingdale United Methodist Church has been spreading God's love for over 175 years, and we continue to foster personal growth and strengthen a relationship with God by opening our doors to the community through special holiday programs and music. Position Summary The Church Organist-Music Director collaborates with the Pastor and Worship Committee to plan and create worship services, following the liturgical calendar. This includes regular Sunday morning services and all special services (Christmas, Easter, Advent, Lent etc.). The Music Director coordinates music for weddings, funerals, and other special events as needed and participates in church-wide events and activities whenever possible. The Church Organist-Music Director professes faith in Jesus Christ and supports the traditions of the United Methodist Church. The Music Director plans and organizes music repertoire and serves as pianist, organist, and Chancel Choir Director for all worship services. Primary Responsibilities Work with the Pastor and Worship Committee to plan and select the music for worship services. Lead 60-to-90-minute rehearsals for the Chancel (adult) choir on Thursday evenings teaching/reviewing hymns, anthems, and responses. The choir typically rehearses and performs every Sunday from mid-September to mid-June. Lead recap rehearsal on Sunday mornings prior to 9:30 a.m. church service. Coordinate music for Sunday mornings during the summer. Select, plan, and rehearse special music and anthems for Holidays. Support optional special events such as weddings and funerals when requested by the couple or family. Communicate with the office regarding equipment maintenance (piano tuning and organ maintenance). Promote congregational participation in learning new music from Hymnals and Praise music.

Understand the United Methodist Church Liturgical calendar and plan music appropriately for the seasons.
Musical skills:
Ability to play piano/electric keyboard to accompany Chancel Choir, soloists, Children's Choir when needed and pre-service preludes. Ability to play pipe organ or willingness to take lessons. Ability to work with both traditional and contemporary Christian music. Education and Training Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Music or Music Education Experience or Training in Conducting Choirs Familiarity with Christian Music Other Requirements Presence is expected for every Sunday morning service, special Holiday services, and Thursday evening choir rehearsals. Scheduled time off should be requested as soon as possible to book a substitute musician. Candidate must pass a pre-employment background check. Benefits and Other Bi-monthly pay periods (15th and last day of month) Five paid PTO days per calendar year (Providing coverage for days off is required) Other unpaid leave may be requested on a case-by-case basis.
