The Director of Music facilitates the worship life of the parish community by coordinating and providing quality music. In collaboration with the pastor, staff, and parishioners, the Director is charged with integrating music ministry into the parish's overall mission. The Director supervises the Choir and cantors and serves as keyboardist.
Administration Responsibilities and Tasks:
Plans and coordinates liturgical music for rehearsals, masses, and other major celebrations. Maintains office hours approximately five hours per week, during regular parish office hours. Coordinates with the Pastor and staff as appropriate. Acts as a consultant to parishioners planning sacramental liturgies such as weddings, funerals, and baptisms, in conjunction with the liturgy chairperson. Prepares parish music program budget as authorized. Obtains copyright permissions for music; submits royalty/licensure payments to the bookkeeper for payment. Maintains the music library, including coordinating music purchase, monitoring inventory, filing, and making copies Attends meetings relevant to the position, including meetings with the pastor, staff meetings, and various liturgical planning meetings. Provides staff support and planning for Liturgy Committee. Attends professional development and representational events several times a year, such as regional music events, Diocesan-sponsored events, and National Catholic events.Performance and Composition Responsibilities and Tasks:
Performs music at liturgical services by singing, playing the organ, and playing the piano. Prepares for rehearsals and services by practicing approximately 10 hours per week, or as authorized. Participates in rehearsals and provides accompaniment as needed. Performs music for approximately 100 regular masses and twenty special services per year. Provides music for special services such as weddings and funerals, to be compensated at a special rate that is paid by the family. Composes, arranges, and transcribes music for use in services. Tunes and maintains the organ and piano weekly.Leadership and Resource Responsibilities and Tasks:
Directs and provides liturgical leadership for rehearsals and services. Conducts/leads weekly rehearsals with the choirs. Rehearses and meets with individual musicians, cantors and ensembles as needed. Invites, motivates and trains volunteer and paid musicians, including cantors. Provides encouragement and feedback to musicians; demonstrates appreciation for service. Recruits and builds choirs. Encourages youth involvement in the music program. Encourages participation of congregational singing at liturgies. Works to foster unity among all parish musicians.Competencies and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, in music or music education with specialized training credentials in liturgical music and a thorough understanding of Roman Catholic liturgy. Knowledge of performance practice and of various religious styles and forms Understanding of musical, liturgical, and pastoral needs; the ability to exercise discerning judgment in selecting liturgical music. Proficiency in keyboard performance, including piano and organ. Knowledge of basic keyboard maintenance, including tuning. Familiarity with vocal techniques and experience in choral leadership.Working Conditions:
This is a part-time position requiring approximately 15 hours per week, spanning regular office hours, nights, and weekends. Hours will vary due to work demands.Physical Demands:
Light physical effort required. Regularly required to sit for extended periods, stand, walk, reach, bend, lift, and perform computer keyboarding.
