Choir Section Leader (Alto) Reports to:

Part-Time Overview The Choir Section Leader at the Episcopal Church of St. Martin is responsible for providing vocal music during worship services and special events. We are dedicated to providing high-quality musical experiences for the parish. This role involves attending rehearsals, learning assigned music pieces, participating in services, and collaborating with the Choir and Music Directors to enhance the worship experience. Key performance expectations include vocal excellence, reliability in attendance, and contributing to a positive, respectful, and faith-centered environment. Responsibilities Musical Performance Attend and actively participate in all scheduled choir rehearsals and services. Rehearsals are usually held Thursday evenings. Most (but not all) services are on Sunday mornings. Learn and perform a variety and diverse sacred repertoire of musical pieces, including hymns, anthems, and contemporary pieces. Maintain high vocal standards, lead and coaching the choir, and follow guidance from the Music Director. Participate in special services and events such as Christmas Eve, Easter, weddings, and funerals as scheduled. Arrive prepared and on time for rehearsals, services, and performances. Follow the dress code and appearance standards for performances. Rehearsal and Preparation Attend weekly rehearsals and additional rehearsals for special events as needed. Practice independently outside of rehearsals to learn all solos for your part. Be prepared to sing your solos at rehearsal and services and/or help a volunteer learn them. Assist in setting up and breaking down choir areas before and after rehearsals and performances as needed. Collaboration and Conduct Work collaboratively while tactfully coaching other choir members within your section. Coordinate with choir and music directors and staff to create a cohesive and supportive team environment. Maintain a respectful, positive attitude that supports the mission and values of the church. Adhere to church policies, including those regarding training, conduct, attendance, and communication. Communication and Leadership Maintain clear and timely communication with the Choir Director regarding availability, absences, or any concerns. Ability to motivate and inspire a group of singers. Participate in occasional choir meetings or workshops to improve skills and discuss upcoming events. Other Duties as Assigned Lead section rehearsals if needed. Participate in church outreach events, community concerts, or volunteer opportunities if requested. Support and promote the overall music ministry of the church. Qualifications Strong vocal ability and musicality (alto range); ability to sing in tune and blend with a group. Ability to read music (sight sing) is required. Prior choir or ensemble experience preferred. Music experience required. Punctuality, reliability, and a cooperative spirit. Commitment to upholding the church's mission, values, and code of conduct. Successful completion of a background check and U.S. work authorization. Physical Requirements Ability to stand for extended periods during rehearsals and services is preferred; however, accommodations can be provided. Ability to attend early morning, weekend, evening, or holiday services as scheduled, plus special services during Advent and Lent as needed. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds (e.g., moving chairs or music stands if needed). This task is optional, and help can be arranged.
